Dramatizing Characters and Deepening our Comprehension
This week our class learned that readers learn about their characters by stopping after chunks of text and asking themselves, "What is going on so far? What are the characters doing and saying?" We paid close attention to the patterns in character's behavior and after recognizing patterns in behavior, we talked about what we thought would happen next in the story.

Descriptive Writing
Every student wrote a new descriptive paragraph this week. This was a writing assessment so students followed the writing process and completed this writing task independently without teacher support. They used what they've learned during the past few weeks to publish their writing piece.
Writing Pieces (with teacher support):
Math
Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20
Our focus this week was to practice ways to add and begin learning strategies to subtract.
Ways to Add
- Add by making a 10
- Add by grouping into a 10 and ones
- Add by using double facts plus one
Subtract by grouping into a 10 and ones
Science
Air and Weather
This week our focus question was, "How can compressed air be used to make a balloon rocket?" Students reviewed that air can be compressed and pressure from compressed air can move things. During the investigation, we created a balloon rocket and discussed how the air made the balloon rocket move down the string. We also explored how to make the balloon rocket travel the farthest distance.

The next part of our Science unit will focus on weather. Our class asked, "What's the weather today?" We went outside to feel the air and check the weather. We discussed how the air feels outside and how we can tell that the air is moving. I explained that the sun affects the weather because the sun is the source of light that warms the air, water, and land. We also learned about temperature and brainstormed a list of words that we might use to talk about temperature: hot, cold, cool, warm, freezing. We used a thermometer to measure the temperature of two bowls of water (cool, warm). Students observed the red line go up and down. I recorded the temperature of the classroom, then the class predicted if it would be colder or warmer outside compared to the classroom. We talked about what would happen to the red line.
