Reading
Science readers build up a base of knowledge on a topic by reading deeply about the topic.
This week students practiced supporting their answers by finding evidence in the books they're reading. After reading the questions they wrote last week, they started looking for answers in their nonfiction books. When they found an answer to one of their questions, they said, "That's the answer!" and wrote it down. Students talked about where the answer was in the book as their evidence (page number, words, pictures, photos).
Example:
On page 14 it says...
On page 20 it shows...

Report Writing
Students continued working on their animal reports this week. As writers students are practicing how to organize the information in their reports into five sections. While revising, they are also adding more details to each section before they're ready to publish.
Five Sections:
Beginning --> one or two sentences
What does the animal look like? --> two or three sentences
Where does the animal live? --> two or three sentences
What does the animal eat? --> two or three sentences
What is another interesting fact about your animal? --> two or three sentences
Math
- Mental Math Assessment
- Telling Time
This week we completed our Mental Math chapter. We will continue practicing addition and subtraction this month as we prepare to add and subtract numbers to 100 using the strategies taught (with and without regrouping).
We have also been learning more about telling time. This week our class was introduced to telling time to the half hour.

Plants and Animals
*Habitats
This week our class learned about habitats. We read a nonfiction book about habitats and created a concept grid to complete while we were reading. After listing plants and animals that live in each habitat, we talked about different structures that help certain plants/animals survive in their habitat.
Habitats: ocean, forest, grassland, pond, tundra, rainforest, desert
