Fire Drill
On Monday, September 30th we had our first fire drill for the school year. The students did a wonderful job listening and following directions!
Shibuya Police Station - Social Studies Field Trip
Tuesday, October 1st
Tuesday, Oct. 8th
G1 students will go on a walking field to the Tomigaya Fire Station in the morning on Tuesday, October 8th. We will leave UST at 9:45 am. and will walk back to school at 11:00 a.m. Students need to wear their orange P.E. t-shirts to school on this day.
Field Trip Chaperones
During the school year Grade 1 students will go on 6 or more field trips. It is important that our class has at least one parent that is available to chaperone for each field trip. Unfortunately without a chaperone, future field trips will need to be cancelled. Mr. Hassey and I will do our best to let all Grade 1 parents know information (date/time) for upcoming field trips as soon as we can, once details have been finalized with the field trip location and office. Thank you!
A big thank you to Mrs. Yellen!
She has volunteer to be G1A's Class Parent this year.
Math
Addition Facts to 10
Our class has been learning about addition facts using numbers to 10. This week students practiced telling and solving addition stories by following the steps below:
1. Read and understand the story problem
2. Draw a picture
3. Create a number bond
4. Write an addition sentence
5. Answer the question
Addition Story Example:
Writing
Writing a Paragraph
This week students continued following the writing process to write and publish their first paragraph. During the school year I will meet with students one-on-one in a writing conference before they publish their work. During a writing conference students read their writing to me and we talk about what they did to revise and edit independently. Next I help the student revise and edit their work. I model how to add words, change words, and check for capital letters, end marks, and spelling. When the writing conference is finished, they start their published writing piece. Next week each student will present their final writing piece to the class and we will put their work on display in the classroom.
Reading
Readers Build Good Reading Habits
During Reading students continued practicing how to read with a reading partner, learning that readers share books with each other by talking about funny parts, sad parts, confusing parts, or parts that surprise us. Students also practiced talking about the books they read by asking and answering thoughtful questions. To end the week the class was introduced to text-to-self connections. Next week we will learn about text-to-text and text-to-world connections.
Social Studies
Why do schools have rules?
This week our class talked about why we have rules in our classroom/at school and who makes those rules. We matched rules to the reasons why we have them (Ex. We walk in the halls. ---> Helps us be safe).
Who works at your school?
During Social Studies I asked the class a new question, "Who works at your school?" Students thought about who helps them at school and we created a list of UST names on the board. During the following weeks students will learn more about teachers, principals, secretaries, and custodians.
Our class learned that a job is a task or work that someone does. The students talked about jobs that their family members have. I explained that people earn income when they work and we discussed why is it important to earn income. We also learned about the special skills people need to do certain jobs.
Special Skills - Examples:
School Nurse (job) - Takes care of others (special skill)
Bus Driver (job) - Drives safely (special skill)
School Cook (job) - Makes good food (special skill)
Students worked with a partner to create a poster about teachers to show examples of how they help children and families at school.
Social Studies Vocabulary
job - a task or work that someone does
income - money people earn when they work
Windshield Check - Student Self Assessment
Last week our class was introduced to the Windshield Check. Students will use this to help show their understanding of concepts being taught. For example, if our class is learning about solving addition stories, after the lesson I will say, "Windshield Check! How do you feel about what you learned?" Students will show one of three responses: clear, buggy, muddy. It's a great opportunity for students to reflect on their own learning and understanding! While they are working at their desk, they can also show the buggy or muddy signal to let me know they need help.
Have a wonderful weekend!
- Ms. Allison
