Dear Parents,
On behalf of the Student Council and the PTA, we would like to inform you that next week UST will take part in three consecutive fundraising events to help raise awareness about cancer, as well as to show our support for people fighting cancer and to raise money for cancer research. Please see the event descriptions and flyers attached below.
1. For Children
Friday, Nov 9th - Pink Day fundraiser.
Wear Pink and donate 100 yen (or more) to raise awareness about breast cancer and show our support to formal UST teacher, Ms. Libby, who is undergoing cancer treatment at the moment. We also want to demonstrate our support to Bennie Manurung (G2B) and her dad who lost their beloved mother and wife Anna to cancer this September.
2. For Mothers
Saturday, Nov. 10th - Charity clothing sale.
The clothes are kindly provided by Mirai Kobayashi’s parents, who always run a very successful clothing sale booth at our school carnival every year. If you are looking for some new clothing items at incredibly discounted prices - this is your lucky day!
Please see the attached flyer for details. The advance ticket sale starts this coming Monday, Nov. 5th (please send a money envelope to school to be given to the homeroom teachers).
3. For the whole Family
Sunday, Nov. 11th - Charity walk “Steps for the Future”
A charity run/walk to support “Shine On! Kids” - a wonderful charity that supports pediatric cancer patients in Japan.
UST has done this walk before and everyone involved had a wonderful day interacting with the service dogs, making courage bracelets, and walking together as a family to help brighten up the day for children fighting cancer in Japan.
The walk is at Kiba Park which would be a great place for a family outing and a picnic afterwards.
Thank you very much for your support!!!
Hope to see you on Saturday and Sunday.
Ms. Natasha
Every month, we are inviting parents to UST to read a book to the G1 students. G1A and G1B classes will come together in the shared space to listen to the Mystery Reader read a story.
We are looking for more parents to participate as Mystery Readers during the school year, so please take a moment to click here and sign up for a week/day that works well with your schedule. Thank you!

Social Studies
Rights and Responsibilities of Citizenship - Why Is It Important to Learn from Each Other?
This week we focused on the question, "Why is it important to learn from each other?" and discussed how people are similar and different. We also compared and contrasted classmates' interests and talents.
Students played a game to learn how classmates are similar and different than them. They walked around the classroom and asked each other questions, such as, "Do you like to dance? Do you like sports?" Afterwards, I asked the class, "Who answered a question the same as you? How are you the same? Who answered a question differently from you? How are you different? Can you still be friends?" We sang the song We Are Special and talked about how each student in our class is special! We learned about things that make each of us special and the different things we can do well.
Students also practiced talking and listening skills by sitting across from each other, knee-to-knee. The "talker" held up a piece of paper with a mouth on it and the "listener" held up a piece of paper with an ear on it. We practiced inappropriate and appropriate ways to talk and listen.
Appropriate Ways
How should we talk?
- make eye contact
- speak in a normal voice
- talk only to your partner
How should we listen?
- don't make sounds
- face the speaker
- make eye contact
Math
Subtraction Facts to 10
This week our class was also introduced to fact families. Students are continuing to practice subtraction story problems and are beginning to use related addition and subtraction facts to help solve story problems.
Reading
Tackling Trouble
Our class met three more Reading Strategy buddies at the beginning of the week: Skippy Frog, Tryin' Lion, and Helpful Kangaroo.
Writing
Narrative Writing - Personal Narrative
This week students presented their personal narratives to the class. To end this writing unit next week, students will follow the writing process and wrote one more personal narrative independently as an end of unit assessment to show how much they have grown as writers!
Grammar
Singular and Plural Nouns
Our focus during Grammar this week was singular and plural nouns.
Vocabulary
Singular - one
Plural - more than one
Our class practiced adding -s and -es to make a word mean more than one.
- add -s (Ex. one bat / two bats)
- add -es (Ex. one dish / two dishes)
We also learned that some nouns use different words to show more than one:
- one child / three children
- one foot / two feet
- one man / four men
- one mouse / five mice
- one tooth / ten teeth
- one woman / two women
Spelling
Hunks and Chunks: sh, th, ch, wh
