Every month, we will invite parents to UST to read a book to the G1 students. G1A and G1B classes will come together in the shared space to listen to the Mystery Reader read a story.
When you have a moment, please see the G1 Monthly Mystery Reader calendar at the link below:

If you are interested in being a Monthly Mystery Reader, you can choose a week that's highlighted on the calendar. After you pick a week that is open (no one has signed up) please complete the section on the left side of the calendar with your name and child's name. You can also write the days and times you will be available.
Ms. Larissa and I will contact you to pick a day/time that you are available in the week you selected. We can also suggest book/story topics that will connect to what we are learning at school.
Remember, it is a mystery! Please do not tell your child if you are the mystery reader. We would like to keep it a surprise for the students. We hope to have many parents volunteer and participate in this new, fun part of our school week!
Our first Monthly Mystery Reader visited the G1 students this week! Thank you Mrs. Burlison!
Ms. Larissa and I would like to invite parents to attend G1's Career Day at UST! Our hope is that this event will help students connect what they are learning during Social Studies (work and community) to the real world!
Date: Friday, January 19th
Time: 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
We are asking that parents that sign up prepare a 5 minute presentation of their job. To help the students get involved, you can show pictures or bring in objects students can see and touch. If you want to prepare a presentation, Google Slides is a great option! You can share it with your child's teacher using our UST school email addresses and we can display it on the TV.
If you are interested in participating, please complete the Google Sheet by using the link below:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sna7JJKQdAWE-lXlGb8-MxXtJWBA7K5geeCctC8_KNs/edit?usp=sharing
If there are no time slots left, please write your name on the shared Google Sheet under I'm interested, but there are no times available. Larissa and I will discuss scheduling another Career Day so all parents who are interested have an opportunity to participate. Thank you!
During Reading this week, our class learned about senses poems. We reviewed our five senses, then read examples of senses poems together. After reading the poems, students used the information to figure out the topic/subject of the poems. Students also practiced analyzing poems with their Reading partner.
I see _____________.
I hear ____________.
I feel _____________.
I smell ____________.
I taste ____________.
Next week we will review senses poems, then students will have an opportunity to pick a topic/subject and write their own poem. Afterwards, students will need to memorize a poem and present the poem to the class. I will send more information home about this assignment next week.
I am so proud of the effort students showed as writers this week! We have been practicing how to follow the writing process to write a paragraph. This week each student was ready to publish and present their final paragraph to the class. We celebrated completing this writing task and students were excited to put their work on display in the classroom!
This week our class practiced making patterns with solid shapes, then reviewed the concepts introduced in Math Chapter 5 Shapes and Patterns. We completed Chapter 5 and students took a chapter test to show what they have learned.
Next week we will start a next Math chapter. Chapter 6 will focus on ordinal numbers and positions. During this chapter, students will practice using numbers and words to describe order and position.
Chapter 6 Focus:
- use ordinal numbers
- use position words to name relative positions
Chapter 6 Vocabulary:
first second third fourth fifth sixth seventh eighth ninth tenth | last before after between left right next to under above below | behind in front of up down near far |
During Science this week students participated in a performance assessment for unit 2 Technology All Around Us. During this activity, students had to follow the design process independently to build a bridge that would be strong enough to support a weight. They used drinking straws, wooden sticks, yarn, tape, and glue for their design. The class looked at photos of bridges from around the world to help them brainstorm ideas for how to build their own model bridge.
Design Process
1. Find a Problem
2. Plan and Build
3. Test and Improve
4. Redesign
5. Communicate
I am assessing if students can:
- Identify a problem and select appropriate materials to build a model bridge
- Plan a design and build a model bridge
- Use approved criteria to test the strength of the bridge
- Improve and redesign the bridge to make it stronger
We continued our current Social Studies chapter this week (chapter 2). Students were introduced to new vocabulary words: trade, producer, consumer, market, save, and borrow.
Lesson Goals/Objectives:
I will know that people buy goods and services.
I will know how people spend and save money.
Social Studies Vocabulary
Trade: give one thing to get something else
Producer: someone who makes or grows goods, or offers services
Consumer: someone who buys and uses goods or services
Market: place where goods are sold
Save: to put money away until later
Borrow: take something and promise to return it
Some of these words are still new to our class, so please take time at home to review Chapter 2 Social Studies vocabulary. You can also practice finding examples of producers, consumers, goods, and services in the community to help your child better understand what these words mean.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a great weekend!
- Ms. Allison
