Dear G1A Parents,
Japan Culture Day is coming soon. Japanese class students (Nihongo class) are preparing to speak about Okinawa. I gave my students one paper of their part. I would like them to practice reading it at home for Friday's event.
Thank you,
Mitsue Hamano

Dear Parents,
Our Sports Day and Carnival will take place on Saturday, April 20 (or Saturday, April 27 in case of rain)! This event brings the entire UST community together for a fantastic day full of games, food, prizes, entertainment and more. Details on the location and times will be announced closer to the event date.
Right now we are collecting new and gently used toys, games, jewelry, activities, accessories, anything that might be suitable for children- from the littlest ones to the oldest. These items will be used as prizes OR sold as desirable second hand items to raise money for charity. The idea is that when the children play the carnival games (one game organized per class), they will win game points in the form of stickers (collected on a game point card) that can be redeemed for a prize that correlates in value to the number of stickers they have collected. We are looking for all sorts of items- even little things, as we want everyone to go home with a prize!
This is a great opportunity to spring clean your toy cabinets of new and lightly used toys that are in excellent condition, clean, and have all parts. Please bring toys in at school, or send with your child in a bag labelled with your name and your child’s name, by April 10. Toys can be handed over to school staff at the entrance of the building in the morning. If you are donating big items (bike, doll house...) please take a picture and send it to us, so that we will arrange for it to be delivered closer to the event date.
We are also looking for vendors that want to set up a booth at the Carnival- previous years we've had clothes, jewelry, food, etc. If you or your family or friends might be interested in setting up a booth, we would love to hear from you and of course share more details on the ins and outs.
We thank you, and the children will thank you for your donations to the prize tent! As always, the Carnival is a way for us to raise money for a charity (TBD). We hope we can bring in a record sum this year with everyone's best efforts!
Kind regards,
UST PTA

Reading
We Can Be Our Own Teachers When We Work Hard to Figuring Out Words
This week our class practiced how to read fluently by fixing our mistakes and reading again. After reading a book the first time to figure out all the tricky words, students read the whole book again to understand and enjoy the story. While reading with their reading partners students picked a "good fit" book that their partner would enjoy and practiced reading aloud with feeling by using rate and intonation together.
Writing
Poetry - Rhyming Poems, Acrostic Poems
Last week UST had its Poetry Slam! To continue learning about poetry students had time to write more rhyming poems and learned about acrostic poems. After reading and analyzing acrostic poems students began writing their own name poem. Next week students will create a creative cloud acrostic name poem.
Grammar
Apostrophes
Our grammar focus this week was apostrophes. Last week our class learned about contractions and how to use an apostrophe to "take the place" of the letters that were "popped out". We reviewed contractions and learned that we also use apostrophes when showing that someone owns something (possessive form). We completed an activity called Apostrophe or Not? which included plurals (no apostrophe), possessives ('s), and contractions.
Contraction Song
I pop some letters out.
I put an apostrophe in.
I pop some letters out.
That's the way it must begin.
To do contraction action it's as easy as can be!
Come on and dance with me!
Math
Numbers to 40
- read numbers to 40
- write numbers to 40
- count numbers to 40
- compare numbers to 40
- number patterns
- place value (tens, ones)
We started a new Math chapter titled Numbers to 40. During this chapter students are practicing how to: read and write numbers to 40, count numbers in order to 40, compare numbers to 40, count on from 20 to 40, place value (tens, ones), and numbers patterns.
Social Studies
Life Long Ago and Today
During Social Studies we continued looking at photographs to learn more about school and student lives long ago. We discussed how a student's life today is different than 100 years ago. Students used a T-Chart organizer to draw pictures to compare life long ago and now.
