Outdoor Recess
Please help your child bring these items to school (labeled with name):
- sunscreen
- mosquito spray
- hat
We walk to the park, so your child's items need to be in a bag that is easy for them to carry. Thank you for your help!
Science Fair
This is a reminder that students will be presenting a demonstration of their science experiment at the Science Fair event on Friday, May 31st. If your child chose an experiment with an instant result (volcano), he/she can show the result during the presentation. If your child chose an experiment with a result that takes time to observe (crystals, coins), he/she can bring their final results from home to show at the end of their demonstration.
*Students need to practice their Science Fair presentation at home during the week of May 20th. Information about the presentation will be sent home next week (amount of time, what needs to be included, etc.).
At this time, your child should have all assignments in RED completed:
Task 1 - Due Monday, April 22nd
Choose an experiment
Buy the materials
Task 2 - Due Monday, April 29th
What is your question?
What do you think will happen?

Reading
Science readers build up a base of knowledge on a topic by reading deeply about the topic.
*Book Clubs
This week our class worked on building their vocabulary and knowledge about their book club topics by using the glossary and dictionary. After practicing vocabulary, we thought about our book in parts by determining the whole topic and what each section is about. As readers, students shared what they learned in their nonfiction books by stating the main idea and supporting it with evidence from the text.
Writing
Report Writing
Report Writing - When you write a report, you share factual information. You share what you have learned about a topic.
During Reading, students are reading books to learn about their animal topic. They are using this information to help them write a report. This week students completed their pre-writing page. Next week they will work on their drafts.
Math
Mental Math - Addition Strategies
*Add Mentally
This week we started a new chapter called Mental Math and focused on adding mentally.
- Mentally add 1-digit numbers
- Mentally add a 1-digit number to a 2-digit number
- Mentally add a 2-digit number to tens
Telling Time - to the hour
This week students learned how to tell time to the hour. We will continue to practice telling time to the hour and half hour every morning during our Morning Meeting.
Science
Plants
During Science we observed new plants called pothos. We didn’t have seeds to make a new plant, so we brainstormed what we could do to get new plants from an old plant. The class learned the word node, then prepared cuttings to observe during the next few weeks.
How can we make a new plant from an old one?
- Roots and leaves develop on stems on nodes.
- Plants are living organisms that need water, air, nutrients, light, and space to grow.
We also observed potatoes, talked about where potatoes come from, and brainstormed how we could make a new plant from a potato. I cut the potatoes apart and we planted the pieces of potato in soil.
What grows from the nodes of a potato?
- New plants can grow from the stems of mature plants.
- Potatoes are underground stems.
- Potato eyes are nodes where buds grow.
Have a wonderful weekend!
