Reading
Readers Meet the Characters in Our Books
This week our class learned how to be reading detectives! Detectives use clues to solve mysteries, so as readers, we looked for information and clues to learn more about the characters in our books! If a student tells me something about a character, I will say, "Prove it! What's your evidence?" They will need to look in the book and tell me/show me what the character does and says to support their idea.
Our class also practiced getting to know characters by thinking about how the characters change from the beginning to the end of the story. We also looked for patterns in characters' actions and predicted what the characters would do next in the story.

Creative Writing - Write a story
This week students worked on pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing their first creative writing piece (made up story). Next week we will focus on publishing their work.

Math
Shapes and Patterns
During Math students reviewed and practiced the names and properties of plane shapes and solid shapes. The class learned about repeating patterns and practiced making and completing different patterns, focusing on what changes (color, shape, size). We completed our Shapes and Patterns chapter with a Math test on Thursday. Next week we will begin a chapter all about ordinal numbers and position words.
Social Studies
Who works in your school?
Our focus this week during Social Studies was learning about teachers and principals. To start the week, we learned that a job is a task or work that someone does. The students talked about jobs that their family members have. I explained that people earn income when they work and we discussed why is it important to earn income. We also learned about the special skills people need to do certain jobs.
Examples:
School Nurse (job) - Takes care of others (special skill)
Bus Driver (job) - Drives safely (special skill)
School Cook (job) - Makes good food (special skill)
Students worked with a partner to create a poster about a teacher and a principal to show examples of how they help children and families at school.
