The highlight of this week was our Social Studies presentation of Korean culture by Zion and Harrison's mothers. Each child tried on the traditional celebratory dress of Korea, the hanbok. They also played a traditional Korean ball game where they had to kick a small pom pom like disc as many times as they could. To finish everyone had a special snack and drink to celebrate sharing our cultures which is the topic of our current Social Studies unit. In ELA we have been working on our poems. Children are bringing home the poems they wrote themselves to practice. Next week in class we will have a mini Poetry Slam to choose the person who will represent grade 1a in the school wide poetry slam. We are also presenting an excerpt from the Amy Schwartz poem, 100 Things That Make Me Happy. We also started looking at non-fiction books in reading. For Show and Tell students shared their own non-fiction books from home. We finished our unit on length in Math and will be starting on weight next week. In Science we did an experiment to find out if plants grow better in fresh or salt water.

In Math we looked at non standard measurement and children had fun measuring things around the classroom with units such as craft sticks, connecting cubes, magnets links and dominoes. This week we also started a unit on Poetry. Children were introduced to mind mapping to make list poems, rhyming poems and acrostic poems. Children worked in groups to write simple poems in the lead up to a school wide Poetry Slam. After everyone writes and learns a poem next week we will have everyone present their poem to the class and vote on the poem to send to the Slam. In Science we continued to observed and learn ways to classify rocks and soil with two hands on observations. Children seem quite interested in these two earth's resources and generated a lot of questions that could lead further investigations. Sonal, a professional poet did a poetry workshop in the art room. Everyone was excited to join in reciting a poem with her and then went to work on making a mind map of a feeling they had experienced. Sonal asked the children to write about what makes them have that feeling and to associate colours, food, animals and games with the feeling. After this everyone presented their ideas to their friends. Show and Tell this week prompted a games session in the afternoon after everyone had presented on their favourite game and how to play it. We ended the week with a fun after noon playing and celebrating Ayana's 7th Birthday in Niko Niko park. Ayana's mum brought cupcakes to the park for both grades and we all sang happy birthday to Ayana. Congratulations to Ayana and thanks to Idelia. Have a great weekend, Larissa In Science this week we collected soil and rock samples and talked about the properties of both. We also did a student initiated experiment looking at which type of soil would hold the most water. Students also wanted to know which soil would be best for growing plants so that will lead to another experiement in the coming weeks. In Math students did a end of unit test which they took home and shared with their parents. We then started a new chapter on length and had fun comparing two and three objects using taller, tallest, shorter, shortest and longer, longest. In ELA students wrote a Valentine's message to their parents, looked at pronouns and double consonants in grammar and phonics. In reading students continued to look in depth at the characters in the books they read. G1 did well identifying how characters were similar and diffferent to them and then presented these findings to their friends. This week's Show and Tell topic was sharing a game with the class and giving instructions on how to play the game. In Social studies students brainstormed and shared what they knew about culture. Next week they will bring home a parent questionnaire where they can gather information which can be used for their poster presenatation.
Have a great weekend. In Science this week children finished their constructions with natural resources. We also went to a local park to search for earth's resources such as air, water, plants, animals, rocks and soil. Children worked with a partner to find examples of all and record them. In Math we continued to work on adding and subtracting with single and double digits. Students started to work with real world problems and will write some of their own subtractuion and addition stories next week.
In ELA students used their initial thoughts and comments from last week's field trip to write a narrative piece about the trip and the things they had learned. During the editing process children reread and worked on correcting their own spelling or grammar mistakes. We reviewed use of capital letters and the editing symbol used. If you see 3 lines under a letter in your child's writing it means they should use a capital letter. In reading students continued to do small character studies focusing on what their characters liked or didn't like. On Thursday each child did a reading assessment on Raz Kids to assess thier reading and comprehension level. We started a new unit in Social Studies which will culminate in a poster presentation on a tradition that their family shares. We will also have some parent volunteers present as part of this unit. This week has been a fun and busy week with many things going on. Last Friday in science we made small clay bricks and then this week children used these dried bricks to make small shelters and other constructions. Next week we will be adding representations of other natural resources. We had special visitors in the class on Tuesday. lilico brought in her two guinea pigs, Emma and Sophie to spend the day at school. There was great excitement throughout the day as many children delighted in being introduced to the two cute creatures. Everyone also did a great pece of comaparitive, descriptive writing which we turned into a book that we will present to Lilico as a thank you for bringing in her pets. Our field trip to Tokyo Water Science Museum was a great day filled with learning and fun. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their day as they went on the journey of water coming fromthe high mountains to households. There were many fun hands on experiements and exhibits and a small quiz to do as well. When we got back to school everyone wrote in their writing journals about all the fun they had. A big thank you to Anthony's mum, Summer and Tyler's dad from G1b for helping out on the day. Another highlight of the week was Japanese Cultural Day. It was good to see so many people dressed up to celebrate the Japanese culture and traditions. There were many exciting things to do throughout the day such as each Japanese class presentation, karate demonstration, mochi pounding, Japanese games, paper cutting art, calligraphy, koto playing, kamishibai (Japanese paper theatre) and mamemaki (bean throwing for Setsubun). A big thank you to all the parents who helped make it such a great day! |
