Spelling - our weekly words focused on alternative ways to read and spell the the long a sound in words. students learnt that "ai" is usually inside a word and "ay" is usually at the end of a word. We also talked about the "eigh" in the word "weigh" which although said the same as "way" but has a different meaning and spelling (homophone). We also used the Jolly Phonics songs to remember the sounds of letters and vowels.
In light of this week's Valentine's celebration and kindness notes that were written throughout the school we discussed kindness and examples of kind acts. On Friday children brought home envelopes with secret kind comments from their friends.
On Tuesday we day we thoroughly enjoyed many traditional Japanese experiences. First up the students from both Japanese classes presented to the school. After that we enjoyed a dance and nunchaku show. Through dance we learned how to tie a furoshiki (traditional Japanese wrapping cloth). Students also did Japanese crafts and games. Some had a chance to wear kimonos. Everyone really enjoyed the band. We finished the day with students singing the Momotaro song to PTC parents and other guests who had come to share Japanese culture with us. Thanks to all those that made this day such a success.
After the Bake Sale we went to the 2nd floor to learn more about Chinese New Year, make paper clay dumplings and write good fortune posters for our doorways around the school. We ended the day with a Kungfu demonstration and had a chance to learn from a master, teachers included!
On Thursday we celebrated being at school for 100 days. Children worked a math and spelling activities. During Math time students worked in groups to come up with a strategy to easily count out 100 objects. Students are still working on working together as a team, so giving them tasks they need to talk about and think through with others promotes teamwork.
