Mathematics.
- Ms. Allison has 14 bracelets. She has 8 fewer than Mr Ivan. How many bracelets does Mr Ivan have?
The common mistake that students are making is the use of the word fewer. Most assume that fewer means less therefore it is a subtraction problem. This leads to a lot of answers of 6. We have been drawing pictures of the problem in our maths books to help us realise that Ms Allison has the LEAST amount of bracelets, therefore Mr Ivan's total must be more (the answer is 22 bracelets.) Tricky!
Writing.
Reading.
- What is the moon made of? (Igneous rock!)
- How big are space rocks?
- Why are volcanoes so hot?
- What makes lightning?
The students were then tasked to find answers to their questions in pairs while they read their books. We found that sometimes we couldn't find the answer to all of our questions, most books answered at least one.
