Mathematics.
7 - 4 = 3
7 - 3 = 4
3 + 4 = 7
4 + 3 = 7
This was the students first introduction to the relationship between addition and subtraction (apart from just being opposites.) We also revisited the equals sign and how it means 'the same as'. We looked at sums that could equal the same amount and how they could be written:
8 - 5 = 10 - __
1. First we solve what we know: 8 - 5 = 3
2. Therefore 3 = 10 - __
3. Next we solve the next problem: 3 = 10 - 7
4. This means: 8 - 5 = 10 -7 (because they equal the same amount. 8 -5 is the same as 10 - 7!)
We will begin the next unit on the properties of shapes next week.
Writing.
We also practiced how to use a dictionary effectively when editing. We had races to find our spelling words in the dictionary and what page they were on. We will be continuing this work for another week to help all the students feel more comfortable using a dictionary.
