Mathematics.
Q: Osuke has 4 colour pencils. He goes and gets 3 more colour pencils. How many colour pencils does he have now?
1. What numbers are we using? (students will write down the numbers the question is asking them to use) - 3 and 4.
2. What do we have to do? (students will need to figure out if the question is asking them to add or subtract, for now it's all addition.) Write the number sentence - 3 + 4 = __
3. Solve the problem - 3 + 4 = 7. He has 7 colour pencils.
By using these steps, students will be able to find the information they need to solve the problem without getting distracted by the fact it is a written problem.
Another mathematical idea that the students found hard was the idea of the equal sign meaning 'the same as'. There was some questions were the students had to balance the equation, for example: 6 + 1 = _ + 6. Most students believed that the equals sign is asking for a solution (i.e. there should be a 7 after the equals sign.) Our homework this week was there to give the students extra practice realising that there are many ways to solve a problem and they are all equal to each other.

What do they teach?
How do they help students?
How do they help families?
We also looked at why people work and some of the skills people need for different jobs. Next week we are going to interview Ms. Yukiko and Ms. Natasha about their jobs and how they help our school community.
