Our first full week in a long time! This meant everyone had an extra day to practice their spelling and this was reflected in some really great scores on our spelling test this week. We also managed to have guidance class for the first time in a long time which made Ms Erin very happy. Here's what we managed to get through this week. Mathematics. We are close to finishing up our unit on addition to 10. This week we really concentrated on addition stories and looking for information in texts. The students focused on identifying the numbers that needed to be used in the sums, what the process the question in asking for, writing the number sentence and finally solving the problem. We even made our own stories so we can answer them in circle time! Here's a great example written by Molly: - Emma has 5 flowers and Hanna has 2 more. How many flowers to they have altogether? Writing. This week in writing we concentrated on writing our goals for the PTC's on Monday. We looked at what areas the students thought they were doing well in and the areas they would like to do better, planned and drafted our first responses and published the final 3 goals for academics, behaviour and social. Next week we will start our unit on narrative writing (we call them 'recounts' in Australia) which will last us for the rest of the month. Reading. We looked at 'making connections' this week in reading. We looked at making connections to texts based on our own experiences and read, 'My Dad' by Anthony Browne (a great book and thoroughly recommended!) Then we made connections and compared similarities of other texts by reading two Mo Willem's books, 'The Pigeon finds a hot dog' and 'The Pigeon wants a puppy'. Lastly we looked comparing books to events and places in the real world and looked at the harrowing allegory, 'The Rabbits' by John Marsden and Shaun Tan. Science. We finished our investigation of sound in science this week and planned, hypothesised and constructed what we called, 'cup walkie talkies' (a cup phone). We discovered that it is possible to send messages through a string to another person using paper cups and designed our walkie talkies to transmit sound over one metre! We also hypothesised what we would need to do if we extended the range to over 4 metres! We then finished the assessments for the unit and are ready for our next segement, investigating light! The winner of the prize box is.....Katherine again! Lady luck is certainly with her as she took home a pretty sweet robot arm! I even managed to get a small smile out of her until I took a photo.......
