Science readers build up a base of knowledge on a topic by reading deeply about the topic.
During reading this week students worked with their book group to complete their Venn diagrams from last week to practice comparing and contrasting two nonfiction books on the same topic. They also revisited our class' nonfiction books and continued reading about their animals to help them gather more facts for their animal reports.
Report Writing
Students continued to work on their animal report drafts, checking that the information included in their report is factual information and they can prove it by finding evidence in the books they've been reading. They also took time to find keywords in their books and picked one or two to use in their report.
Numbers to 120
During math we focused on counting on by tens and ones and using place value to show numbers to 100.
5 ten = 50 6 tens = 60 7 tens = 70 | 8 tens = 80 9 tens = 90 10 tens = 100 |
What do families need and want?
At the start of the week our class reviewed needs and wants, then the students thought about family vacations and the things they bring with them when they're away from home. While working with their table group, students started planning an imaginary camping trip. I asked the class to imagine they were camping in a place with no houses or stores nearby. Students worked together to brainstorm what they would need to bring: food, clothing, shelter, wants. Each student created their own triarama and drew pictures of one shelter need, one food need, one clothing need, and one want for their trip.
