October Birthday Celebration
Halloween
We had so much fun at school on Friday celebrating Halloween! A big THANK YOU to PTA for organizing our Halloween trick-or-treating parade around the neighborhood. The students were excited to collect all the treats and goodies in their Halloween bags. Also, thank you to all of the parents for helping their child dress up for this school event. Everyone looked great in their costumes!
Show and Tell (Week 1)
Topic: Fall Break
Thank you for helping your child prepare for their show and tell presentation this week! During show and tell, students are practicing how to:
- look at the audience when speaking and answering questions
- speak in a loud, clear voice
- keep their hands and bodies still
- stay on topic while presenting
We also made a list of question words on the whiteboard to help students brainstorm questions to ask after each presentation to help the class learn more about the presenter's fall break.
Please take a moment next week to check your child's homework notebook for their show and tell rubric. I will staple it to the first page. Thank you!
Science
Sound and Vibrations
This week we started our first Science unit, which focuses on sound. Students participated in an investigation to explore sound and vibration. We asked the question, "What causes sound?"
Making Sounds - What causes sound?
Students used cups with rubber bands and wooden craft sticks to explore producing sound. We discussed the source of sound and found out it is vibrating. I made a table fiddle and students shared their observations when we plucked the string. Then the students made their own book fiddle at their desk using two rubber bands, a plastic cup, and a hardcover book. We are learning that sound always comes from objects that are vibrating and vibrating objects always make sound.

Math
Addition and Subtraction to 10 - Fact Families
This week we completed our addition and subtraction to 10 chapter. The class reviewed fact families and practiced how to solve math problems using related facts. We also worked on identifying number sentences as true or false, then talked about how we can prove that our answer is correct. Students learned that number sentences can be written in different ways (ex. 3+4=7, 7=3+4) and it is important to understand that the equal symbol = means the same as (ex. 2 + 7 = 9 - 0).
Math Vocabulary
fact family
true (ex. 4 + 4 = 8 This is true.)
false (ex. 4 + 5 = 8 This is false.)

Writing
Personal Narratives
During writing this week, students reviewed how to revise and edit their writing pieces that we started before fall break. We also began publishing and will continue to publish next week. Once students have completed their published work, they will present their writing to the class.
Reading
Tackling Trouble
We started a new unit in reading called Tackling Trouble. During this unit, students will practice reading strategies to help them read new, tricky words. During reading students were introduced to four reading strategy buddies: Eagle Eye, Lips the Fish, Stretchy Snake, and Chunky Monkey. Next week our class will meet Flippy Dolphin, Skippy Frog, Tryin' Lion, and Helpful Kangaroo.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Happy Halloween!
