Poetry
As we prepare for the end of our poetry month, Mr. Hassey and I would like to take a moment to share how proud we are of all the grade 1 students! Everyone was ready to put forth their best effort to practice and present one of their poems to all of the grade 1 students while Mr. Hassey played the guitar. Congratulations Sophie, Kai, Emma, and Reed! These G1 students participated in the Poetry Slam on Friday. We also had our poetry raffle to end the week. Congratulations to all of the raffle winners!
We hope the addition of music to our poetry event made learning about poetry and writing poems even more enjoyable for everyone this year. Poetry doesn’t stop here though! We will continue to bring poetry into the classroom during read alouds and journal writing time. If your child writes any new poems at home, please feel free to share them with us via email or on Seesaw. We’d love to read them together at school. Thank you!
Reading Dramatizing Characters and Deepening our Comprehension During reading our class asked the question, "What makes a good director?" We practiced becoming directors by thinking about the important parts in the stories we read, then acted out the scenes from the stories in our minds. We said, "Think first! Act it out in your mind!" Before acting, we discussed what we could do with our voices, facial expressions, and body to make the characters come alive. We also learned that directors help actors read fluently by reminding them to show a character's feelings with their voice. While reading, we reminded each other to change our voice to match how a character feels. |
Math
Addition and Subtraction within 20
Students played a spinner math game at the beginning of the week to practice the addition strategies they have learned. Working in their table groups, students spun two numbers on their game board, then added the numbers together. The class was also introduced to using place value (tens and ones) to add larger numbers.
Way to Subtract
- Subtract by taking away
- Subtract by counting back
Social Studies
How are we good helpers at school?
This week we started a new social studies chapter asking the question, "How are we good helpers at school?" Students thought about how they help others at home, then drew pictures and wrote about what they do.
We talked about different things that might happen at school and how we can be good helpers, then we acted out each example.
