Reading
Dramatizing Characters and Deepening our Comprehension
As readers, students continued practicing how to get their voice right while reading and acting like the characters in their books (tone, expression). Our class was introduced to dialogue tags (said, yelled, answered) and paid attention to punctuation (end marks . ! ?) to match their voices to the story and guide their reading.
Science
Light
This week our class reviewed what we've learned about sound and light, then the students participated in one more investigation to end the unit. During the investigation, we answered the question, "What can be seen with no light?" With the lights off, the students looked inside a box. Each box had a paper taped to the back of it. The students tried to identify the shapes, colors, and relative position of the images on the paper. Many students shared that they couldn't see anything inside the box. We brainstormed what we could do to get light into the box. They used a flashlight and drew a picture of the images they saw.
We learned:
- Light is required for vision.
- Eyes are light detectors.
- Humans can't see in the absolute dark because there is no light to detect.
Next week we will start a new Social Studies unit.

Answers and money due: Friday, January 29th
Note from Student Council:
Each month, there are new but challenging questions for the children in Grades 1 - 6. Questions for Grade 1 - 3 are on the message board on the 4th floor and those for Grades 4 - 6 are on the board on the 6th floor.
The children should answer all the questions clearly, writing their answers on a piece of paper along with their name and class, then hand their submissions to their class teacher along with ¥50 to enter.
The first piece of paper from each grade that is pulled out and has all the correct answers wins!
Children can enter as many times as they wish, but there is still the ¥50 entry fee.
Entries will be drawn on Friday 29th January and announced in the monthly assembly that day.
Have a wonderful weekend!
