Fire Drill
This week we had another fire drill at school. The students did a wonderful job listening and following directions!
Writing
Descriptive Writing
Students continued following the writing process this week to revise, edit, and publish their descriptive writing pieces. As they prepare to publish, students are practicing copying all the correct sentences from their draft onto their published writing paper. They are reading their own writing, reflecting on their writing, and checking that it makes sense.
Reading
Story Elements - Readers Meet the Characters in Our Books
G1A students are learning how to be reading detectives! Detectives use clues to solve mysteries, so as readers, we looked for information and clues to learn more about the characters in our books! If a student says something about a character, I will say, "Prove it! What's your evidence?" They are practicing how to look in the book and find the page that tells/shows what the character does and says to support their idea.
Questions to ask:
Who is the story about?
What does the character do?
What does the character say?
What does the character like? How do you know? Prove it!
What does the character dislike? How do you know? Prove it!
How is the feeling character? How do you know? Prove it!
Did the character change? How did the character change from the beginning to the end?
Math

Science
How does sound travel from the source to the receiver?
This week we completed our Science unit all about sound. Students used spoon-gongs to continue investigating how sound travels. As a class, we drew a model showing how the sound travels from the source to the receiver. We also discussed the question, "How could we use a spoon-gong to send a message?" We cut the spoons off two spoon-gongs and attached the strings with a piece of tape to create a string-cup telephone. Students shared their observations and we drew a diagram on the board (see the photos below). I explained that when we talk, our vocal cords vibrate to make sound, so during the investigation, their voice was the sound source and their classmate's ear was the sound receiver.
November Birthday Celebration
