UST's World Book Day
Friday, March 5th
Greetings and Salutations, Parents of UST!
World Book Day is next week (Friday, 5th of March) and this year's theme is: “How Books Transport Us”!
In these times of a locked-down world, one of the safest ways to escape from the daily humdrum of life is with a great book! Finding a calm place, opening a classic adventure novel and drifting off into a magical or faraway land can be a true source of comfort. Therefore...
On Friday the 5th of March UST students will be able to:
- Dress as their favorite character from an adventure or travel story Examples include (but are not limited to): A Wrinkle In Time, Madeleine, The Hobbit, Tin Tin, The Chronicles of Narnia, Percy Jackson, Oh the Places You’ll Go, Journey.
- Give a presentation about the character they are dressed as!
- Enjoy story times read by children from different grades!
- Take part in various World Book Day Activities throughout the day!
- Donate 100 Yen to this year’s charity - Book Aid (providing books and resources for school children in developing countries)
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask your child's homeroom teacher.
Kind regards,
United School of Tokyo

Social Studies What Was School Like Long Ago? This week our class learned more facts about schools long ago:
We asked the question, "How is school different today?" Students drew pictures of objects you'd find in a school long ago and objects you'd find in schools now. |
Reading
We Can Be Our Own Teachers When We Work Hard To Figure Out Words
This week we discussed that readers need to know how to use all the reading strategies they've learned to help them read new words. Sometimes when we are reading, the first strategy we try doesn’t work, so we need to try another strategy. When a reader feels stuck on a tricky word or part in a book, they can say, "I'm stuck! What else can I try?"
We've also learned that even when we don’t get stuck on the words, we still check to make sure the book makes sense before we keep reading. While reading, if something feels confusing, students are practicing asking themselves, “Does that make sense? Does this fit with what is happening in the story?” We learned that it is important for readers to check-in with themselves to make sure that what they're reading really makes sense.
Writing
Creative Writing - Writing a story
This week students started planning their made-up stories by thinking about the parts of their story (main character, setting, problem, and solution). Next they drew pictures to show the beginning, middle, and end of the story.
- Beginning - The beginning names the main character and setting. It also tells about the problem.
- Middle- The middle tells how the main character tries to solve the problem.
- Ending - The ending tells how the problem is solved and how the main character feels.
Next week students will use their ideas from their story plan to write their first draft.
Have a wonderful weekend!
