This week in science we focused on land, water continents and oceans.
We looked at a globe and a map and compared them. We also discussed and read about all the different continents and oceans. The students are working on their own continent and ocean books. We also introduced them to compasses. They enjoyed walking around with them and testing them out.
Social:
In science the students are learning about different ecosystems; tundras, prairies, deserts, rainforests...ect.
They picked 4 ecosystems to research more in-depth. They are in the processing of completing a display to show their research in class.
ELA:
We finished up expository writing by creating a piece about `how to` help Orangutan. For Earth Day grade 1 will be promoting awareness of Orangutans and how deforestation is destroying their habitats. This week the students read and watched videos about the plight of the orangutan; they then wrote about ways they could personally help. We will be exploring this topic more in-depth over the next few weeks. The Sumatran Orangutan Society has generously sent us an educational packet to help guide our project.
Math:
This week in math we focused heavily on two digit-subtraction with regrouping. This seems to be a new topic for many of the children and we will try to focus on the aspects that seem to be challenging them.
Have a great weekend!
