This week we covered many topics in math. We focused a couple of days on understanding numbers up to 40; specifically how to write the words for the actual number and counting the numbers. This is a really basic concept but it is to prepare the students for adding and subtracting larger numbers. We also looked at place value, revisited comparing numbers and ordering patterns.
Science:
We focused more on plants this week. We discussed questions such as: what do pants need? Why do plants grow? Are all seeds alike? What are the parts of a plant? Then the students decorated their own milk cartons and planted different seeds.
We also focused on how water moves through a plant.
We are currently conducting an experiment with a celery stock; we put red food coloring in the water. We will observe to see if the celery absorbs the dye.
Social Studies:
We focused on where things are located on a map. We had a simple discuss about different features we could find on a map such as streets and bodies of water. The students also completed a "Me on the Map" booklet. This book has the students examine their place in the world by illustrating the neighborhood, city, country and plant for which they live.
ELA:
This week in ELA we focused on narrative writing. The students made a personal narrative about what they did during spring break.
The students also began to learn how to use a dictionary. We worked a lot in the phonics books and with real dictionaries to help develop this important skill.
Finally,
The students really got to enjoy the sakura blossoms on campus earlier in the week. We took photos outside and even got to have our own 1B hanami party.
It was beautiful day and I posted some pictures here.
Have a great weekend!
