We will not be doing a bake sale this year, however the Student Council has decided to do a fundraiser to support an animal advocacy organization called FRIENDS OF ANIMALS. Here is what our students can do to support this cause on Friday, February 12th:

*Valentine's Day cards will be passed out on Friday, Feb. 12th.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
Next week every class will be working on making Valentine's Day cards at school (Monday, Feb. 8 - Thursday, Feb. 11). Students need to make at least one card for each student in their class. After finishing the cards for their classmates, students are welcome to make additional cards if they want to and deliver them to friends in different classrooms.
If your child does not finish their Valentine's Day cards at school or would like to work on them at home, they will be sent home in their homework folder. All cards completed at home need to be returned to school by Friday, February 12th.
If you would like, your child can also attach fun items to the cards they make, including erasers, pencils, and/or stickers.
Thank you for your help!
Eco Patrol
Thursday, February 4th
The grade 1 students did a great job helping clean up the playground this week!
Math
Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20
This week our class continued to practice ways to subtract and add within 20. Next week students will use addition and subtraction strategies they've learned to help them solve number story problem.
Ways to Subtract
- subtract by grouping into a 10 and ones.
- subtract by using addition facts
We also worked on telling if a number sentence is true or false.
Dramatizing Characters and Deepening our Comprehension
To continue deepening our understanding of characters, we learned that readers understand how characters interact by thinking about how their words and actions affect each other.
Character A said/did _______,
so Character B said/did __________.
We also practiced reading, then stopping after a chunk of text and asking questions:
- What is happening so far?
- What is the character doing?
- What is the character saying?
- How does the character feel?
Writing
Descriptive Writing
This week our class started working on another descriptive paragraph. Students completed their prewriting page and started their drafts. Next week we will work on revising and editing.
Descriptive Writing: You use your five senses to create a picture in the reader's mind (taste, touch, smell, hearing, sight).
Social Studies
How can we be good helpers at school?
Maps - What is a map?
During social studies we finished our chapter all about how to be good helpers, then started a new unit all about maps. We will answer the question, “What is a map?” To help our class learn about maps we listened to a story about a first grade classroom, then created a map on the floor using pictures of the items in the classroom. Next week we will practice drawing maps using symbols to stand for the classroom items.
New vocabulary: symbols, map key, compass rose
*SOCIAL STUDIES MAP HOMEWORK: Students will have a social studies homework assignment next week. Please check your child's homework folder for their Me on the Map book (due Friday, Feb. 12th). There will also be a reminder sent on Seesaw. Thank you!
Show and Tell
Week of March 2nd - Life Today vs. Long Ago
Towards the end of February grade 1 will start a social studies unit all about life today vs. long ago. Our class will compare and contrast past and present community life, with an emphasis on schooling, children’s lives, and transportation. To help connect learning at school to home we are asking students to interview a grandparent. Students only need to interview one grandparent. If you are unable to interview a grandparent, students can interview a parent.
On Monday your child will bring home a paper that has a list of questions that students can ask. If your child needs more space to write or has more questions they would like to ask, please write those responses on a different piece of paper.
We ask that you send at least one picture of your child with their grandparent as part of the Show and Tell presentation. You can email photos or send them to school in your child’s homework folder. Another option is to create a PechaKucha presentation with up to 10 photos to share with the class.
If you have any questions, please let us know.
Thank you for your help!
