November 11th - November 25th
Dear UST Parents, The Student Council would like to inform you that UST will soon be hosting our annual Charity Read-a-thon to raise money for our chosen charity for the year: One Tree Planted. The Read-a-thon will take place between Monday 11th November and Monday 25th November 2019. We deliberately included two weekends to make sure we have a lot of time to read because the more we read, the more money we can raise. And the more money we raise, the more trees we can plant. |
It is a reading marathon to raise money for charity. We will be asking our parents, relatives, or friends to sponsor our reading. Of course, we read every day anyway, but for the 18 days of the Read-a-thon, we will be reading even more and trying to raise money for charity.
We are asking for your help to sponsor our reading effort.
Kindergarten students will be raising money for every book/story they read. The elementary students will raise money for every minute they read. The classes that read the most stories in K and for the longest time in Elementary will get trophies.
The two children in each class who read the most will also receive a prize!!!
What have we supported in the past?
In previous years, the money we raised during read-a-thons sponsored the construction of a classroom and the purchase of new library books for our sister-school in Cambodia; new toys for an orphanage in Senegal; and learning supplies for a school at a Syrian refugee camp.
What are we supporting this year?
This year, we are making connections globally. We are raising money as part of the global reforestation project through the One Tree Planted foundation. Planting trees is perhaps the easiest, cheapest and most efficient way of tackling climate change and helping to protect the environment and global biodiversity. This is our way of giving back not just to a single community, but our global community. The Earth is our home, let's protect it!
For every $1 or ¥100 we raise, a tree will be planted.
Last year, we raised a record ¥551,586 during our Read-a-thon. That would be the equivalent of 5551 trees planted by the UST community.
We would like to smash this record this year and plant even more!
For more information on this charity, please follow this link to the charity's website.
The following is an inspirational video by Greta Thunberg explaining why we should be protecting out forests and planting trees:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q0xUXo2zEY
What's next:
In the coming days, your children will bring home a reading log that is specifically for the Read-a-thon. Please sign the form each day to confirm your child's reading minutes and sponsor your children.
We hope for your cooperation in helping us read and raising money to support our environment and our world.
- The School Council team

Show and Tell (Week 1)
Topic: Free Choice
Math
Shapes and Patterns
Our new Math chapter focuses on shapes and patterns. To begin this chapter, our class learned about plane shapes. We created a shape poster for each shape (see list of shapes below). Each shape poster includes: name, number of sides, number of corners, what it reminds us of, and examples of the shape in the classroom. While creating the posters, students discussed how the shapes are alike and different. We also practiced sorting the shapes in many ways: color, shape, size, sides, corners.

Writing
Narrative Writing
During Writing this week, students continued publishing their writing and began presenting their published writing pieces with their classmates. The students were excited to read one another's writing and shared many kind comments to continue encouraging each other as writers! It's wonderful to see how proud the students are of the work they've completed!
Reading
Tackling Trouble
This week we completed our reading unit Tackling Trouble. To end the unit, students practiced coaching nicely to help their reading partners find mistakes when they read. If their reading partner made a mistake while reading, they said, "check that" to help their partner fix the mistakes and reread.
Our class also reviewed how to read in a good reading voice (storyteller voice).
Fiction - sound like you're telling a story
Students practiced picking a fiction book and reading in their best reading voice.
Spelling
Word Sorts: words ending with -nk, -mp, ng, -nd, -nt
Science
Sounds
During Science our class took a sound field trip around the school. Students drew pictures and wrote about what they were hearing in different parts of the school. After the field trip we talked about what information sound gives us. I asked the students: What did you observe with your ears? What did you hear? What is the source of the sound? Did you hear any animals? Did you hear a vehicle? Did you see it? Was that a loud or soft sound? What was vibrating? What information did you get from the sounds you heard?
We reviewed vocabulary from Investigation 1 about sound and vibrations and ended the investigation with an assessment.
Vocabulary: sound, vibration, sound source, sound receiver, hear, loud, soft
Next week we will investigate changing sound.
Grade 3 Social Studies Presentations
On Monday, Nov. 4th Grade 3 shared their fantastic 3D models and presentations they created as part of their Social Studies unit. Grade 1 students walked around and learned a few fun facts about each landmark.
