We had a great first day of school! It was wonderful seeing so many familiar faces this morning and meeting all the new students! I'm excited for the school year to begin and I hope your child is feeling excited too!
School Assembly
This morning G1-G6 students attended a school assembly to welcome everyone back after the summer holiday. Ms. Natasha discussed UST rules and expectations, then introduced the teachers and the new students to the school.
What will the first week of school include?
This week G1A students will learn the daily routines, procedures, and rules of our school and classroom. They will also participate in a variety of activities to help them get to know their new classmates and build a community of learners that are ready to grow together this year! During the first week of school, students will be introduced to Reading Workshop, Writing Workshop and will start practicing/reviewing numbers to 10 during Math.
The first couple of weeks will also include beginning of the year assessments such as letter names, letter sounds, sight words, number recognition of numbers 1-20, writing numbers, an F&P reading assessment, and a writing pretest.
This is a friendly reminder for what your child needs to bring everyday:
- snack (please help your child know or label which food items are for snack and lunch)
- lunch
- water bottle
- indoor shoes
- restroom towel
- homework folder (sent home today)
Swimming Gear
G1A's swimming class is scheduled for Thursdays and will begin next Thursday, September 6th. Please take time this week to make sure your child has everything he/she needs for swimming class. Today our swimming teacher, Ms. Diana, spoke to the class to help them prepare.
Swimming Items: swim bag, swimming cap, towel, goggles, zip lock bag (for wet clothes), uniform clothes, extra underwear
*Everything brought to school needs to be labeled with your child's name
Homework Folder
First Week's Homework: Bring your favorite book to school on Tuesday, August 28th
Your child's homework folder is coming home today. Inside you will find our first homework assignment (favorite book), Class Dojo sign up page, student information form (due back to school by Monday, September 10th), first grade homework schedule, reading at home letter, and an example of our yearly reading log. We will not start our regular homework schedule this week, but are asking every student to bring her/his favorite book to school tomorrow to share with our class. We will keep these books for the week, then return them on Friday.
I understand there is a lot of information being sent home at the beginning of the school year and I appreciate you taking time to read this post. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you again!
It's going to be a wonderful year of first grade at UST! : )
