Sorry for the delay!
We had a very busy week last week. Last week we had a few special events.
On Thursday we went to the Tokyo Water museum. The trip was related to our upcoming unit on the environment. The students really seemed to enjoy this trip. They learned where water comes from and all the different ways we use it. There were many fun interactive exhibits but they seemed to love the giant water table the most.
This week we also celebrated Japanese culture day. There were so many activities that day. The children got to pound mochi, watch and try karate, listen to the story of Hachiko, have a full Japanese lunch, meet a famous paper artist and so much more. They all seemed to have an amazing time.
ELA:
This week we continued our focus on descriptive writing. A student from 1a brought in a guinea pig that we all observed. The students were then asked to create a descriptive writing about the guinea pig.
Social Studies:
We focused largely on Japanese culture this week in the sprit of our Japanese culture day. For show and tell this week the students brought in something related to Japanese culture and shared it with the class.
Math:
This week were worked on addition and subtraction by finding a group of 10 and by creating number bonds. I have a heard from a number of you that you are unfamiliar with this way of adding and subtracting. It is a different approach for sure, however, it is just one approach we will learn. We will learn other strategies. In this curriculum they aim to expose the students to a variety of different methods to help better understand the concept.
Science:
Last week in science we talked more about what living things need to live. The students worked with clay and began construction on their own shelters. This is to help reinforce the concept of living things needing a shelter to survive.
