We would like to inform you that we are starting our Poetry Month next week! There are three major events that occur in March.
1) World Book Day (Thursday, March 7th)
The children dress up as their favorite book characters and bring the book that matches the character to share with the class. The dress up is mainly for G1-G6 students but K students are also very welcome to participate.
2) Raffle Ticket Poetry Recitals (March 12th - 14th)
All children who would like to participate in this event, are to memorize and recite a poem of their choice. Every memorized poem will give them an opportunity to receive a raffle ticket and win exciting prizes. Below are the days of the raffle poetry recitals.
Poetry Recitals
Tuesday, March 12th - Funny Poem (Pick a funny poem, memorize it, and recite it!)
Wednesday, March 13th - Rhyme Poem (Pick a rhyming poem, memorize it, and recite it!)
Thursday, March 14th - Haiku Poem (Pick a haiku poem, memorize it, and recite it!)
Grades 1 and 2: The poems must be at least 8 lines or more.
Grade 3 - 6: The poems must be at least 12 lines or more.
*Students can earn up to 3 raffle tickets for the week to be part of the raffle drawing and win an exciting prize!
**If any of the K students would like to recite poems and participate in the raffle, they are most welcome to!
3) Poetry Slam (Friday, March 15th)
G1-G6
This is the main event of the Poetry Month! All children must create their own poems in order to compete in the annual Poetry Slam. The children will be performing their poems in class, and the three best poems will be selected from each class to compete in the main event. Grades 1 and 2 will be competing together in the Lower Elementary Division, whereas Grades 3 - 6 will compete in the Upper Elementary Division.
Please make sure the poems your children present are original!
Kindergarten
K1 and K2: The children will be making a class poem.
Kindergarten will not be participating in the competition but the K3 class will be a part of the supporting audience. Poetry Slam is a great way to encourage a love for poetry and inspire children to use their creative writing in a variety of ways.
The theme for this year is Beatnik again. The dress code for the Poetry Slam is a black t-shirt and jeans or black pants (hats or glasses are optional). Please refer to the attached images for inspiration.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, if there are any questions about this event, please refer to your child's homeroom teacher.
Sincerely,
