Dear parents,
This year, after having introduced the Squad system we have decided to compete in four different teams for the Sports Day. All students, including all K classes, are split into the four UST Squads, Narwhals, Eels, Turtles and Stingrays. You can find the name list by Squads here.
Stingrays and Turtles must wear ORANGE UST T-shirts
Narwhals and Eels must wear GREEN UST T-shirts
To help us distinguish between the Squads, we have decided to have the students wear bandanas. Could you please have your child/ren wear a bandana on their head or neck to represent their Squads? These bandanas also would be worn to school assemblies from now on. Bandanas could be purchased on Amazon (please see the links below) or sourced out at a 100 yen shop.
1. Stingray Red
2. Turtle Purple
3. Narwhal Blue
4. Electric Eel Yellow
We also would like to remind you that next week, Wed through Friday we will have our Spirit Week to help our teams get in the spirit of Sports Day. Please help your children celebrate Spirit Week by reminding them to wear the following:
Wednesday (Apr 17)
Crazy hair and team colors day (make a crazy hairdo or color your
Thursday (Apr 18)
Twin Day (coordinate with your friends and wear the same outfits)
Friday (Apr 19)
Famous people day (dress up as your favorite famous person - rockstar, inventor, book character, etc.)
Please let us know if you have any questions.

Also it will be fantastic if everyone can stay after the event to help clean not only our booth but everyone else's as well.
Thank you!

Reading
Nonfiction Readers Learn about the World
Our new Reading unit is all about nonfiction. At the beginning of the week our class worked together to organize our classroom library into two groups: fiction and nonfiction.
Fiction - books about made up people and events
Nonfiction - books about real things in the world around us
We looked closely at the special parts of nonfiction books. Students read different nonfiction books and searched for examples of the text features introduced.

Writing
Expository Writing
Our class started a new writing unit this week. We are focusing on expository writing. Students learned that when you write an expository writing piece, you share information about something or explain how to do something. For the next few weeks students will be writing how-to paragraphs.
Examples:
How to make pizza
How to make a PB&J sandwich
How to plant a flower
How to make green paint
Three traits to help you write a how-to paragraph:
IDEAS - Think of something you can explain.
ORGANIZATION - Put the steps in order.
CONVENTIONS - Following the writing rules (grammar, spelling, punctuation, capitalization)
Commas
This week we reviewed when to use commas in a letter:
- Date ( Friday, April 12, 2019 )
- Greeting ( Dear _______, )
- Closing ( Love, Sincerely, Your Friend, )
We learned that we also use commas when we’re writing words in a series:
Example: I like bananas, apples, and oranges.
Math
Addition to 40
Before Spring Break our class practiced counting, ordering, and comparing numbers to 40. When we returned to school this week, we reviewed what we learned and practiced addition strategies to 20 that were taught during Term 2. Next our class was introduced to addition to 40, learning about addition with and without regrouping.
Social Studies
What Groups Do We Belong To?
This week we asked the question, "What groups do we belong to?" Students practiced identifying family, school, and community groups. Each table worked together to sort photos into these three groups. Students also applied their knowledge about groups to their own lives, telling their classmates about the groups they're a part of.
Have a good weekend!
