As we prepare for the last term of grade 1, please continue sharing your thoughts and concerns with me. My goal is to create a fun and enjoyable learning environment for your child. Thank you for your continued support and everything you do at home to support your child's growth and learning!
Thank you to all the parents that have volunteered to be Mystery Readers for our G1 students! If you are interested, please look at the calendar to find a week that works well with your schedule and sign up to be a Mystery Reader during Term 3!

Nonfiction Unit - Nonfiction Readers Learn About the World
This week we started a new Reading unit about nonfiction texts. Students were introduced to fiction vs. nonfiction. We discussed what makes a book fiction or nonfiction, then identified the "special parts" in nonfiction books (text features). Students learned that text features can help readers understand nonfiction books and practiced how to preview nonfiction books by using text features.
Chapter 12 Numbers to 40 - Count, Compare, Order
Throughout Term 3, students will begin learning new strategies to help them add and subtraction larger numbers. Our focus this week was numbers to 40. Students practiced counting, comparing, and ordering numbers 1 - 40 as well as representing numbers on a place value chart (tens, ones).
Math Vocabulary:

Animals Unit
For the next couple weeks, we will study animals during Science.
Big Idea: All animals have to meet needs in order to live and grow. There are many different kinds of animals. They are grouped by their traits.
Essential Questions:
What Are Living and Nonliving Things?
What Do Animals Need?
How Are Animals Different?
How Can We Group Animals?
This week students were introduced to our new unit. We discussed the different between living and nonliving things, identifying some examples of each. Next week we will read informational text and talk about how an environment contains both living things and nonliving things. Students will work on observing and classifying living things and nonliving things in an environment.
Science Vocabulary
Living: Living things are people, animals, and plants. They need food, water, air, and space to live. They grow and change.
Nonliving: Nonliving things do not need food, air, and water, They do not grow and change.
Reproduce: Living things reproduce. They make new living things like themselves.
Environment: All the living and nonliving things in a place make up an environment. (Ex. farm).
Traditions We Share
Before break, students completed their Family Celebration poster. These were on display outside our classroom during PTCs. This week students presented their poster to the class, telling us about their family celebration, their pictures and photographs, and answering questions from their classmates.
A few students still need to present their posters to the class. We will finish our presentations on Monday.
Goal Setting
After returning to school from Spring Break, students began preparing for our PTCs. Each student worked on writing about their strengths, then reflected on the goals they set for themselves earlier in the school year. I am so proud of G1A students for thinking about their goals, talking about how to reach their current goal, and being ready to set new goals for themselves. It was wonderful to hear students share these writing pieces with their parents at the PTCs!
Thank you for helping make it a great week back to school!
Have a good weekend!
