We Can Be Our Own Teachers When We Work Hard to Figuring Out Words
This week we started a new Reading unit and reviewed the Reading Strategies we learned during Term 1. We learned that readers solve tricky words by using all of the strategies that they have learned and monitor as they read by asking themselves, "Does that make sense?"
Writing
Persuasive Writing
This week students published and presented their persuasive paragraphs to the class.
Next week our class will begin preparing for UST's Poetry Slam. We will use writing time to pre-write, write (draft), revise, edit, and publish poems for this event. More information about the Poetry Slam will be shared next week.
Science
Air and Weather
*Wind Vanes
*Windsocks
To end our Science unit about air and weather, our class learned about wind vanes, windsocks, and seasons. We explored what a wind vane and windsock can tell us about wind. Students learned that a wind vane tells us about wind direction and a windsock can be used to observe wind direction and wind speed. Each student made their own windsock and we tested them outside at the playground.
Math
Measurement - Length
After returning to school from the long weekend, our class reviewed words that can be used to describe and compare height and length.
Math Vocabulary
short / shorter / shortest
long / longer / longest
tall / taller / tallest
We practiced using a common starting point when comparing lengths. We called the starting point a 'starting line.' Students also worked with their Math Partners to measure items in the classroom with different objects.
Measuring Objects:
- popsicle stickers
- paper clips
- connecting cubes
- math links
Example:
The book is about 5 paper clips long.
We also talked about the relationship between the length of measuring objects and the number of objects needed.
If I have a larger unit, I need less of them.
If I have a smaller unit, I need more of them.
Have a wonderful weekend!
