G1 Career Day
Last week students were introduced to our new unit called Tackling Trouble. Students learned how to read new, tricky words like our Reading buddy Eagle Eye. This week our class learned how to read like Chunky Monkey, Flippy Dolphin, Lips the Fish, and Stretchy Snake. These reading strategies introduce what students can do if they get stuck on a new word and need to figure out what the word is.
When we returned from Winter Break, our class learned about descriptive writing. Students are following the writing process to write and publish a descriptive writing paragraph. Students spent time this week writing their first draft and revising and editing their writing piece. Next week they will publish their work and share it with their classmates.

Our focus this week was long a. All of our spelling words had a long a sound and a "magic e" helping the a "say its name." We also practiced four new hunks and chunks with the long a sound.
ACE: race, face, space, place, trace, pace
AI: rain, brain, chain, grain, train, pain, wait
AY: bay, pay, day, clay, stay, may, lay, way
EIGH: eight, neigh, weigh, weight, neighbor, sleigh
Math
This week we continued practicing comparing numbers to 20. Students learned that tens and ones can help us compare numbers (see example on the left). Set A: 13 Set B: 14 Set B has 1 more than Set A. Set A has 1 fewer than Set B. Students also reviewed number patterns and used numbers 10 to 20 to create patterns, solve missing parts in patterns (10 12 ? 16 ?) , and extend patterns (What number would come next if this pattern continued?). |

During Science this week we asked the question, "How does the sky seem to change?" We thought about why the sun seems to move across the sky and learned that this happens because Earth is turning and each day, Earth turns all the way around.
Science Vocabulary
Phases: the shapes you see when you look at the moon
Shadow: a dark place made where an object blocks light
Students read informational text to learn new facts about objects in the sky:
- The sun is the brightest object in the daytime sky.
- The sun warms Earth's land, air, and water.
- Shadows change as Earth moves because the sun's light shines on objects from different directions as the day goes on. Shadows change in size and change position during the day.
- Phases change as the moon moves. Phases follow a repeating pattern and last about a month.
Next week students will participate in a Science investigation to explore the position of the sun in the sky and how the shadow of a stick changes throughout the school day (morning, noon, afternoon).
This week we focused on maps and globes, learning that maps and globes show places on Earth. Students used the information they learned to create their own map with a title, key, symbols, and a compass rose.
