Getting Super Smart about Nonfiction Topics
During reading, we continued practicing how to use post-it notes to mark interesting parts in our nonfiction books and write about what we're thinking, noticing, and wondering. Students took time to share some of their post-it notes with the class.
Teaching Books (nonfiction books)
This week our class studied nonfiction books from our classroom library and asked, "What does the author do that I can do in my book as well?" Students worked on adding headings (chapter titles) and a table of contents to their teaching books. The class also practiced using a table of contents to help plan a teaching book, using their fingers (e.g. chapter 1... chapter 2... chapter 3...) and telling all about each chapter.
Numbers to 40
This week we started our next math chapter focusing on numbers to 40. To begin, we practiced counting to 40 (count on by ones, count on by tens, count on by tens and ones).
Next we used place value to show numbers to 40 (tens, ones) and worked on comparing sets and numbers. Students played a game with a partner to practice comparing numbers.
Math vocabulary: greater than, less than, equal to, more, fewer, same
What Groups Do We Belong To?
How Are Families Special?
During social studies this week, we continued learning about groups we belong to: school, community, and family groups. Students drew pictures of community groups and family groups they belong to. Next, we asked the question, "How are families special?" We brainstormed what the word family means and made a word web, then students thought about what makes their family special.
