Mystery Reader - Parent Volunteers
Dear Parents,
Please take a moment to visit the Mystery Reader calendar. We are looking for parent volunteers to read a book to the G1 students during Term 2. After selecting a week, please email your child's homeroom teacher to let them know and we will work with you to select a day/time for your visit.

Week of March 3rd
Topic: Life today and long ago
*Show and Tell materials will be sent home on Monday, Jan. 27th.
Dear G1A Parents,
During the next few weeks in Social Studies we will be learning about life today and long ago. Our class will compare and contrast past and present community life, with an emphasis on schooling, children’s lives, and transportation. To help connect learning at school to home we are asking students to interview a grandparent about his/her life as a child. Students only need to interview one grandparent. If you are unable to interview a grandparent, students can interview one parent.
The paper below has a list of questions that students can ask. If your child needs more space to write or has more questions he/she would like to ask, please write those responses on a different piece of paper. We ask that you send a picture of your child with his/her grandparent as part of the Show and Tell presentation. You can email a photo or send one to school in your child’s homework folder.
If you have any questions, please feel free to send me an email.
Thank you for your help!

UST Email:
Dear Parents,
This year our Poetry Slam event is on Friday, January 31st.
As in the past, all students will be writing poetry in class for the next two weeks. Students will then recite one of their poems for a class poetry competition. Your child's teacher will let you know when the class competition will be, but expect it to be between January 27th - 29th. Class winners will be selected (two from each G1-G3 class and three from each G4-G6 class), and they will perform their poem during the Poetry Slam event on Friday, January 31st.
For the Poetry Slam on January 31, all students are invited to dress as beatnik poets for the day (black t-shirt and jeans work well, and a beret if you have one!)
Poetry Recitals
In addition to the Poetry Slam, children can also memorize and recite poetry in class to earn a raffle ticket for prizes that we give out at the end of the week. Below are the days that the children can recite the poems and the type of poem they can recite each day:
If there are any questions about this event, please refer to your child's homeroom teacher.
Sincerely,
Augustine Yoon

Reading
Dramatizing Characters and Deepening our Comprehension
This week our class learned that directors help actors read fluently by reminding them to show a character's feelings with their voice. We reviewed that characters' feelings can change throughout the story, so we need to remember to change our voice to match how a character feels.
To continue deepening our understanding of characters, we learned that readers understand how characters interact by thinking about how their words and actions affect each other.
Character A said/did _______, so Character B said/did __________.
We also practiced reading, then stopping after a chunk of text and asking ourselves, "What is going on so far? What are the characters doing and saying?"
Math
Addition and Subtraction Facts to 20
Our focus this week was to practice ways to add.
Ways to Add
- Add by making a 10
- Add by grouping into a 10 and ones
- Add by using double facts plus one
Social Studies
What is a map?
This week students created their own map of a town. Each map includes a title, map key with symbols, and a compass rose. Students followed a set of directions to draw each symbol in the correct spot on their map (Ex. Draw the fire station in the middle of the map. Draw the library west of the fire station.).
We also talked about the world map in our classroom. Students learned that there are 7 continents and 5 oceans. You can explore maps at home by using Google Maps with your child! : ) We used Google Maps to zoom in and find UST's spot on the map!
