Getting Super Smart about Nonfiction Topics
To start the term, our class reviewed what we've learned so far to help us read and understand nonfiction books. During Term 1, our class was introduced to new reading strategies to help us solve hard words. This week we learned that when a reader overcomes an obstacle or figures out a tricky word, they should always remember to reread because it helps them hold onto more information. Rereading can also help readers find just the right way each page should sound.
Reread:
- After a hard word, reread trying to scoop up more words.
- After identifying a keyword, reread adding emphasis to the key word.
- After reading a dramatic part, reread adding emotion to the words.
Teaching Books (nonfiction books)
This week our class reviewed keywords and learned that nonfiction writers use keywords to teach others about a topic. Sometimes though, keywords can be hard words to spell. We reviewed different ways to spell and practiced using syllables to help us.
Students also reread the teaching books they wrote before the holiday break and shared their writing with their classmates, learning that when others read our writing they can help point out parts that don't make sense. This helps us add or take out details to create more clarity. Students also used our editing checklist to check their writing for correct spelling, capital letters, and end marks.
Addition and Subtraction within 20
This week our class continued our math chapter about addition and subtraction within 20.
Students practiced:
- making fact families
- using addition facts to subtract
- telling if a number sentence is true or false
- solving real-world addition and subtraction problems
What Groups Do We Belongs To?
During social studies we asked the question, "What groups do we belong to?" Students practiced identifying family, school, and community groups. Each table worked together to sort photos into these three groups. Next, we talked about school groups and students drew a picture and wrote about a school group they belong to.
Topic: Winter Break
Thank you for helping your child prepare for show and tell this week. Everyone did a great job telling the class all about their winter holiday!
