I hope everyone had a safe and restful holiday break!
Show and Tell
Reading Dramatizing Characters and Deepening our Comprehension Our new Reading unit will help students deepen their understanding of characters and the stories we read. This week our class learned that actors perform to make characters come alive. As readers, students have been practicing how to act and become the characters in our books by using their voice (volume, tone), gestures, and facial expressions to show how character's feel. |

Persuasive Writing
This week students started a new Writing unit all about persuasive writing. The class learned that when you write a persuasive paragraph you share your opinion and give reasons why others should agree with you.
Students are writing a persuasive writing piece about an animal they think is the best pet. Each student will need to include three great reasons why someone should agree with them

Math
Numbers to 20
*Counting and comparing numbers to 20
*Place value (tens, ones)
Our new Math chapter focuses on numbers to 20. This week we practiced counting on from 10 (Ex. 10....11, 12, 13, 14). Students were also introduced to place value (tens, ones). We used hands-on place value materials to "build" numbers to 20 (Ex. 14 - 1 ten, 4 ones / The value of the 1 is 10. The value of the 4 is 4. / 10 + 4 = 14).
Science
Light
This week our class reviewed what we've learned about sound and light, then the students participated in one more investigation to end the unit. During the investigation, we answered the question, "What can be seen with no light?" With the lights off, the students looked inside a box. Each box had a paper taped to the back of it. The students tried to identify the shapes, colors, and relative position of the images on the paper. Students shared that they couldn't see anything inside the box. We brainstormed what we could do to get light into the box. They used a flashlight and drew a picture of the images they saw.
We learned:
- Light is required for vision.
- Eyes are light detectors.
- Humans can't see in the absolute dark because there is no light to detect.
Next week we will start a new Social Studies unit.
Have a wonderful weekend!
