The students did a wonderful job on their science fair projects! We will continue to watch science fair presentations at school next week, but please take a moment at home to check out all the projects uploaded to UST's Flipgrid page. Thank you for all your help at home!
9 G1A students signed up to participate in UST's first Spelling Bee - Carter, Kai T., Haru, Louis, Piper, Lexie, Sophie, Lena, and Teppei. Everyone did a great job on their Spelling Bee test this week! 2 students from each class with the top test scores were selected to be part of the Spelling Bee Grand Final next Friday, June 18th.
Good Luck!
Plants
This week students looked at their little lawns (ryegrass, alfalfa) and wheat seeds, then recorded their observations by drawing pictures and writing in their science notebook.
Observations
- What do you observe in your lawn planters?
- Which seeds started to sprout first?
- How many days has it been since you planted your lawns?
- Where do the leaves grow? Are they all the same?
- How are alfalfa leaves and grass leaves different?
- What has changed since the last time you observed your wheat plant?
- Did all the wheat plants grow with the leaves going up? Why or why not?
Science Vocabulary
- Structure: Different parts of a plant are called structures.
- Roots, stems, and leaves are structures of plants.
- Roots, stems, and leaves are structures of plants.
- Functions: What those structures do for the plant are called functions.
- The roots take up water. That is the function of the roots.
- The leaves make food for the plants. That is the function of the leaves.
We reviewed information we learned last week by asking and answering these questions:
- What are the basic needs of plants?
- What part of a plant takes up water?
- Where do nutrients come from?
- What part of a plant captures light?
Reading Across Genres to Learn About a Topic
Sometimes different books have the same information and as a reader it is important to make connections between your books (text-to-text connection). When we notice this we say, "These books are the SAME because..."Sometimes books on the same topic can have different information and we say, "These books are DIFFERENT because..." This week students used a Venn Diagram to practice comparing and contrasting fiction and nonfiction books by looking for what is the SAME and what is DIFFERENT between them.
Addition and Subtraction within 100
This week our class focused on subtraction within 100, reviewing how to subtract WITH and WITHOUT regrouping. Students also practiced counting back using a 120 chart.
Subtraction within 100
Method 1: Count back by tens and ones
Method 2: Use place value.
We completed our math chapter about addition and subtraction within 100 and will start learning about graphs next week.
Report Writing
During writing this week students worked on finishing their first animal report, then started their next animal report using the facts and information they wrote on their gathering grid last week (pre-writing page).
Thank you for helping your child research an animal at home to help them prepare for their 2nd animal report!
