Telling Time - to the hour and half hour
Our class finished our math chapter all about telling time, but we will continue to practice these skills throughout term 3. When telling time to the half hour, it is important for students to pay close attention to where the hour hand is (eg. 7:30 - the hour hand is half way between the 7 and 8). Please take time at home to help your child practice telling time during different parts of the day and ask them to share what they notice about the clock and how they know what time it is (Where is the hour hand? Where is the minute hand? What does that tell you?).
Addition and Subtraction to 40
Our next math chapter will focus on addition and subtraction to 40 with and without regrouping. This week students reviewed strategies taught this term (eg. counting on, making 10, counting back, using tens and ones) and began learning how to add ones and tens to a 2-digit number without regrouping. Next week we will start practicing addition with regrouping, then continue working on these ideas when we return from spring break.
Air and Weather
This week our class focused on pushing air. Our focus question was, "What happens when air is pushed into a smaller space?" Students reviewed that air is matter and takes up space. We used syringes (plunger, barrel) and flexible plastic tubes to create a two-syringe system to learn more about air.
We will continued to discuss these ideas next week:
- Putting air into a smaller space (compressing air) makes it push back (with air pressure)
- With one syringe, you can't push the plunger in all the way when air is trapped inside. The air pushes back on your hand.
- Plunging one syringe compresses the air and makes pressure. The air pressure pushes the other plunger out.

Creative Writing - Published Stories
During reading this week I met with students one-on-one to complete end of term reading assessments while students participated in independent and partner reading. Their job was to continue working on fixing up tricky words using all the strategies they've learned and reading fluently using their best storyteller voice.
