Friday, March 5th
We had a wonderful time celebrating World Book Day at school on Friday. Thank you for helping your child prepare for this fun school event by dressing up as a character from one of their favorite books and bringing 100 yen to donate to Book Aid. Everyone looked great in their costumes! Students talked with their table groups about the character they chose and shared a little bit about why they picked that character. We also had three G4 students visit during Read Aloud time and read these books to the class:
Math
Calendar and Time
This week we finished our math chapter Numbers to 40 and started a new chapter, which focuses on calendar and time.
Students are practicing how to:
- read a calendar
- know the days of the week
- know the months of the year
- write the date
- know the seasons of the year
Math vocabulary: calendar, weeks, year, seasons, colder, days, months, date, warmer
After reviewing how to use a calendar, our class will start learning about telling time to the hour and half hour.
Social Studies
What Was School Like Long Ago?
We completed our current social studies unit this week all about past vs. present by sharing show and tell presentations and learning about student life long ago. Thank you for helping your child complete this special assignment! The class enjoyed seeing everyone's family photos and were interested to learn more about school long ago from each interview.
Japan Open-air Folk House Museum
For the last couple weeks grade 1 has been learning all about long ago vs. life today during social studies. During our field trip on Thursday, students were asked to make their own Long Ago vs. Life Today book, which included things they needed to be on the look out for at the museum: stable, fireplace, thatch roof, paper door, bathroom, etc. They also drew pictures to show what houses looked like long ago vs. what houses look like today. We thought about how our homes are similar and different to the homes and buildings we saw at the museum.
Grandparent Interviews
Reading
This week we learned that good readers make predictions about what might happen next by using the pictures and what they just read. During partner reading, students practiced stopping before parts of the story and saying "I think _______ because ________."
Writing
Creative Writing - Writing a story
This week students worked on finishing their drafts and started revising and editing their writing. They read their writing to a partner and shared ideas with each other to help them revise and make changes to their story to make it better. After adding details and making changes, we checked for correct capital letters, end marks, and spelling.
Have a wonderful weekend!
