Congratulations to all the UST students who were selected and participated in our poetry slam! I am so proud of all the G1 students for the effort they showed writing and publishing acrostic poems!
G1A Winners:
Emily - 3rd place
Kanna - Runner Up
Thank you for helping your child prepare and practice poems at home this week! Also, a BIG thank you to our judges who took time out of their day to help make this event successful!
UST News will share a video from UST's poetry event soon.
Our class started a new chapter in Math called Weight. Throughout the week, students practiced comparing the weight of two or more things using the Math vocabulary below (Ex. The apple is lighter than the pineapple. The watermelon is heavier than the pineapple. The orange is as heavy as the apple.)

Students were also introduced to the term "unit" when finding weight. We discussed that when someone uses different non-standard units, there will be a difference in measurement, but the weight of the object does not change.
Unit: a quantity used for measuring a thing

Acrostic Poems
Students illustrated their acrostic poems this week and presented their poems to our class for a chance to be selected for UST's poetry slam. To continue practicing acrostic poems, each student also wrote an acrostic poem using their name.
Readers Meet the Characters in Our Books
During Reading, our class focused on how people's feelings change. We learned that the characters in our books can be people, just like us! We discussed that sometimes we feel upset with our friends, then we solve our problems and feel happy again. Students connected this experience to what can happen to book characters. They learned that good readers understand how a character's feelings change by looking at each part of a story and asking themselves, "How does the character feel now?"
Our current Science unit is called Earth's Resources. This week our class answered the question, "Where can we find water?" Students read informational text to identify different types of water (streams, rivers, lakes, oceans) and learned that all living things, including plants, animals, and people, need water to survive. We also discussed how to be safe in and around water.
This week our class reviewed what we learned about culture. Students practiced comparing and contrasting cultures. They discussed what is the same about cultures and what is different. We also shared information about our own cultures, including the food we eat, the clothing we wear, the music we listen to, how we dance, where we live, and the languages we speak.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Have a great weekend!
- Ms. Allison
