Dear UST Parents,
The UST calendar competition is in full swing and we have had some wonderful entries into the competition so far. Well done to all those who have made a fantastic effort and drawn a tree in any of the four seasons.
However, we would love to have more!
Please encourage your child/children to complete/draw a tree to enter the competition before tomorrow's deadline but...entries will be accepted on Monday morning.
We will be judging the entries on Monday during our School Council meeting so all entries need to be with Mr. Hassey or myself before 12pm Monday.
¥100 per entry and all money goes towards the One Tree Panted foundation.
Many thanks for all your continued support!
Mrs D., Mr. Hassey, and the school council team

Hello UST families,
It is almost time again for our Winter Concert! The students have been working hard and they are eager to show you the results of their efforts. Here is the information you need to know in preparation for the concert:
1) CONCERT LOCATION, DATE, TIME
Like last year, the winter concert will be held at The Shibuya Cultural Center Owada (English site) (Japanese site). This location is conveniently near Shibuya station, and nearby parking is also available. Parking is not available directly under the Shibuya Cultural Center building.
The concert will be held on Friday, December 13th and will begin at 9:45am.
Students need to arrive by 9:15 am, dressed for the concert.
The concert should be over by 11:30, and we all need to completely vacate the building by 12 regardless of possible mishaps.
2) DRESS
All classes should dress in their winter 'party clothes'. Dress pants and dress shirts are appropriate, no jeans or t-shirts. Dresses and skirts with tights are also fine. Dark shoes are preferred over sneakers.
Any drama members who need a specific costume will be contacted separately.

Writing
Descriptive Writing
This week students began publishing their writing pieces and will be ready to present their final paragraphs to the class next week. To end the term, students will publish another paragraph independently to practice the writing skills they learned during our Descriptive Writing unit.
Grammar
Nouns + Adjectives
During Grammar, our class learned that adjectives are words that describe or tell more about nouns. We brainstormed a list of adjectives, including words that tell more about how something looks (color, size, shape), tastes, sounds, smells, and feels. Learning about nouns and adjectives helped the students understand their writing task (descriptive writing).
Nouns - words that name people, animals, places, and things
Adjectives - words that describe
Reading
Story Elements - Readers Meet the Characters in Our Books
During Reading, students learned more about characters by imagining what they are thinking. We practiced saying, "Hmm, what would the character think in this part of the story? If I were the character, I would be thinking..." We also reviewed text-to-self connections and students talked about the connections they have to the characters in the books they're reading. To end the week, our class thought about how character's feelings change while looking at each part of the story. Students asked themselves, "How does the character feel now?"
Math
Ordinal Numbers & Position Words
This week students completed an end of chapter assessment for ordinal numbers and position words. We will spent time next week reviewing what we learned during Term 1, including counting and comparing numbers to 10, number bonds, addition facts to 10, and subtraction facts to 10.
Science
Light - Shadows
Our focus in Science this week was light. Students learned that there are natural light sources (sun, fire) and man-made light sources (lightbulbs, flashlights, phones). We used flashlights to investigate light and shadow and learned that a shadow is made when light is blocked. We also used a wood block, a plastic bag, a piece of paper to learn that different materials allow different amounts of light to go through them (opaque, translucent, transparent).
Have a wonderful weekend!
