At the end of UST's Read-a-thon week, G1A students reached a total of 3,961 minutes! Our goal was 2,400 and students worked hard to reach this goal and go beyond it.
After counting our Read-a-thon minutes, our class was excited to try and reach 4,000, so everyone chose to read during free time. Afterwards we celebrated our new total: 4,000 minutes! I am proud to announce that G1A received the Read-a-thon Champion trophy for the primary grades. Congratulations G1A students! As a school, UST read for a total of 40,000 minutes!
Thank you to all the parents who sent their child's money to school. If you have not sent the money your child raised for the Read-a-thon, please send it to school on Monday, November 27th.
Every month, we will invite parents to UST to read a book to the G1 students. G1A and G1B classes will come together in the shared space to listen to the Mystery Reader read a story.
When you have a moment, please see the G1 Monthly Mystery Reader calendar at the link below:

If you are interested in being a Monthly Mystery Reader, you can choose a week that's highlighted on the calendar. After you pick a week that is open (no one has signed up) please complete the section on the left side of the calendar with your name and child's name. You can also write the days and times you will be available.
Ms. Larissa and I will contact you to pick a day/time that you are available in the week you selected. We can also suggest book/story topics that will connect to what we are learning at school.
Remember, it is a mystery! Please do not tell your child if you are the mystery reader. We would like to keep it a surprise for the students. We hope to have many parents volunteer and participate in this new, fun part of our school week!
Ms. Larissa and I would like to invite parents to attend G1's Career Day at UST! Our hope is that this event will help students connect what they are learning during Social Studies (work and community) to the real world!
Date: Friday, January 19th
Time: 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
We are asking that parents that sign up prepare a 5 minute presentation of their job. To help the students get involved, you can show pictures or bring in objects students can see and touch. If you want to prepare a presentation, Google Slides is a great option! You can share it with your child's teacher using our UST school email addresses and we can display it on the TV.
If you are interested in participating, please complete the Google Sheet by using the link below:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1sna7JJKQdAWE-lXlGb8-MxXtJWBA7K5geeCctC8_KNs/edit?usp=sharing
If there are no time slots left, please write your name on the shared Google Sheet under I'm interested, but there are no times available. Larissa and I will discuss scheduling another Career Day so all parents who are interested have an opportunity to participate. Thank you!
This week we ended our second unit of Reading. During this unit, we focused on building good reading habits and participating in collaborative conversations about books and topics. Students read with their reading partners this week and practiced finding funny, sad, confusing, and surprising parts, then wrote about why the parts were funny/sad/confusing/surprising.
Students are learning how to follow the writing process (prewrite, write, revise, edit, publish) to publish their own paragraphs.
This week each student brainstormed 3 topics about their family and picked one to write about. They drew pictures to show 4 details about their topic (Where did you go? Who were you with? What did you do? What did you see? How did you feel?). To help them begin drafting the first copy, students used the "hamburger" graphic organizer to put their sentences in order (beginning sentence, middle sentences, ending sentence). Students started revising and editing, but will continue working on their writing next week. Once students complete the last step of the writing process (publish) they will share their work with the class.
Our class has been learning about plane (2D) and solid (3D) shapes. During Math this week, students used solid shapes to make buildings/models. They practiced drawing solid shapes on paper, then drew a picture of the 3D model they had built. Afterwards, students rotated to different tables and used the drawings to help them build their classmates' models.
We are almost at the end of our second unit in Science (Technology All Around Us). Students reviewed the concepts we learned during this unit and completed an end of unit assessment on Friday. Next week students will participated in a performance assessment, showing how they can follow the design process independently when given a problem to solve and different materials to use.
Our Social Studies unit focuses on work in the community. At the beginning of this week, students learned about goods and services. We listed examples of both on the board.
Social Studies Vocabulary
Goods: things people grow or make, you can use and touch goods
Services: work that's done for someone else, jobs people do to help others
Students were also introduced to cause and effect. We learned that a cause is what makes something happen and an effect is what happens. Our class practiced this new concept with a matching activity.
Have a great weekend!
