November 13 - November 24
UST's first student council event, Charity Read-a-Thon is coming up on November 13th. Student Council decided to raise money to support Syrian refugees by buying them food, medicine and clothes. We are asking for your help to sponsor our reading effort.
G1 students will raise money for every minute they read. By the end of the Read-a-Thon on November 24th, students will be asked to bring their donations to the school. All the money we raise will then be collected and donated to the charity that supports Syrian refugees! We hope for your cooperation in helping us read and raise money for people in need.
G1A students will bring home a new reading log on Monday to record how many minutes they read each night. Every day our class will count how many minutes we read as a group. We will keep track of our reading minutes on a chart in the classroom.
Information for students about UST Read-a-thon:
- Discuss with your parents how much they will donate to sponsor you for every minute you read.
- Record the amount of minutes you read and the money you raise each time.
- Have a parent sign off afterwards and bring your reading log to school every day.
- Tally your total minutes and total amount of money raised on the last day.
- Bring the money you raised to school on Friday, November 24th and give it to your teacher
- Remember to have fun reading!
Starting on Monday, Nov. 13th each class will be awarded points for how clean their classroom is. At the end of every week, Ms. Natasha will announce the "winners" and award Class Dojo points to those students. The class that has the most points will receive a prize for their effort!
On Friday, November 10th Group A presented their show and tell items.
Show and Tell Topic: Fall Break
Group B will present on Friday, November 17th. Please continue to help your child prepare at home for his/her Show and Tell presentation.
This week students completed a benchmark assessment that included concepts taught in chapters 1 to 4.
Chapter 1
Numbers to 10
Chapter 2
Number Bonds
Chapter 3
Additions Facts to 10
Chapter 4
Subtraction Facts to 10
We also started Chapter 5. Chapter 5 focuses on shapes and patterns.
Here are skills we will practice during this chapter:
- Identify, classify, and describe plane (2D) shapes
- Divide shapes into two and four equal parts
- Identify, classify, and sort solid shapes
- Combine and separate plane (2D) and solid (3D) shapes
- Identify plane (2D) and solid (3D) shapes in real life
- Use plane (2D) shapes to identify, extend, and make patterns
- Use solid (3D) shapes to identify, extend, and create patterns
Students have been practicing how to make connections to what they are reading. We've learned that readers can make text-to-self and text-to-text connections. This week we practiced text-to-world connections.
We also learned readers can "make movies in their minds" while they read. This is called visualizing and it helps students understand what's happening. Students practiced this skill by using their five senses and asking questions while they read, "How does it look? How does it smell? How does it taste? How does it feel? How does it sound?" Students work with their reading partners to discuss and record their ideas on an activity page.
During Writing this week we focused on different kinds of sentences. Students learned about telling sentences, asking sentences, and exclamatory sentences. We also practiced end marks (. ! ?).
Telling Sentence
A telling sentence is a sentence that tells about someone or something. Every telling sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a period.
Example: I had to sharpen my pencil.
Question Sentence
An asking sentence is a sentence that asks a question. Every asking sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with a question mark.
Example: What time do we go to lunch?
Exclamatory Sentence
An exclamatory sentence is a sentence that shows a strong feeling. Every exclamatory sentence begins with a capital letter and ends with an exclamation point.
Example: I passed the math test!
We started a new chapter in Social Studies.
Focus: Work in the Community
Big Question: How do people get they they need?
Lesson Topics:
- What We Need, What We Want
- Why We Make Choices
- Goods and Services (Cause and Effect)
- Buying and Selling
- Spending and Saving (Charts and Graphs)
- Jobs People Do
This week we learned about wants and needs. Students brainstormed different wants and needs, then participated in a sorting activity.
This week students thought about the question, "How can we solve a problem?" and were introduced to a new problem they needed to solve.
Design Process
1. Find Problem
Can you use paper and tape to make a stand that holds up a book?
2. Plan and Build
What design will I try? (draw a picture)
How will I build and test my design safely?
How will I know if the design can be better?
3. Test and Improve
Write one way to make your design better.
4. Redesign
Draw a picture of your new design.
5. Communicate
Write and draw to show what happened.
Students followed the design process to design a stand that could hold up a book. It was wonderful to see the designs each student built and exciting to hear about how they wanted to change and improve their designs! Students will take their book stands home next week.
