October 18 - Otober 22
Students do not have school next week. We will return to school on Monday, October 25.
On Friday, 29 October, all UST classes will celebrate Halloween with a Trick or Treat Parade through the neighbourhood- and this year, the middle schoolers have some special surprises planned for the younger grades to make it an extra memorable event.
The children will make six stops on the trick or treat route, walking with their homeroom teachers and for some younger grades, with one additional teacher or volunteer. They will be handed treats or trinkets from parents/MS student volunteers at each trick or treat station.
We are aware that there are children with allergies/food sensitivities, and we will have allergy friendly treats available for them at the stops. We want everyone to feel included! If you have anything to share regarding your child’s allergies, please do so immediately. We urge parents of children with allergies to take all precautions by communicating with homeroom teachers, your child, and the PTA to be safe.
All children are told NOT TO EAT their trick or treat bounty at school and to wait until they are home, so you can supervise. Please reinforce this message to your kids before the event.
Please have your children come to school dressed in their Halloween costumes. Kids will have regular classes in the morning, so costumes need to be comfortable.
Lastly, children will need to bring their own bags (marked with their name) for collecting treats.
Looking forward to a fun Halloween!

Readers Build Good Habits - Solving Hard Words
This week we focused on good habits for solving hard words. First, we learned that readers can preview the pictures (sneak peek the page) and talk about what is happening in picture to help solve tricky words. We can ask, "Do the words match what the pictures show?"
We also learned that when readers are picking up good reading habits, they sometimes pick up bad habits too. In order to get stronger as a reader, we need to drop the bad habits.
To end the week, we practiced using more than one letter to tackle a challenging word, learning that when you are stuck on a word, it's important to look at ALL parts of the word to help you make sense of it.
Small Moment Stories
As writers, students continued working on bringing their stories to life. Last week we learned that we can unfreeze the people in our stories by making them move and talk. This week we focused on telling our stories in small steps and bringing out the inside by making people feel and think.
Tell in small steps - Writers can act out their stories bit by bit to try and pull out the actions and talk about what the characters are doing in that moment. Writers can ask, "Does that sound like a more stretched out story?"
Addition and Subtraction to 10
During math this week our class continued to focus on addition and subtraction to 10.
We learned how to:
- make subtraction stories about a picture
- solve real-world problems involving subtraction
- make fact families
- use related facts to solve problems
Who works at your school?
This week the class worked together to make posters to tell all about different jobs at our school: teacher, principal, and school secretary. We also took time to talk about how custodians help our school.

This week we started a new social studies chapter asking the question, "How are we good helpers at school?" Students thought about how they help others at home, then drew pictures and wrote about what they do. We talked about different things that might happen at school and how we can be good helpers, then we acted out each example. Examples:
