I am so proud of the G1A students who chose to participate in our Student Council election today! We had seven students who prepared and presented their speeches to the class this morning. They all did a wonderful job!
I will announce the G1A Student Council Representatives on Tuesday, Sept. 25th!

After you pick a week that is open (no one has signed up) please complete the section on the left side of the calendar with your name and child's name. You can also write on the calendar to show the days and times that work best with your schedule. I will contact you to pick a day/time that you are available in the week you selected.
Remember, it is a mystery! Please do not tell your child if you are the mystery reader. We would like to keep it a surprise for the students. We hope to have many parents volunteer and participate!

Here are some Q&As from some parents that we would like to share with you:
Q. Will the kids have PE that day?
A. Classes will be back to normal in the PM so if your class has PE on Friday PM, please pack their PE clothes
Q. When can I drop off the food and where?
A. Please have your child bring it to school Friday morning on the day, and leave it in the classroom. You can use a cooler bag and icepacks for things that need refrigerating. No need to bring it in person!
Q. For the dress up, can kids wear it from home or change at school, and my daughter (G1) will wear/bring school uniform?
A. All grades to wear from home, no uniform (unless it needs to be put on at school). However if your child has PE in the PM, please pack PE clothes.
Q. Is this students only event or parents will attend? If parents will attend, what time is it start and finish? If not and sign up for bringing food, kids will bring the food when they go to school in the morning?
A. It is a student only event, except for parents who are volunteering to present in class.
Food can be dropped off in the AM or have the children bring it in with them.
Q. How do I sign up as a presenter?
A. If you would like to participate as a presenter, you can do that on the sign up sheet as well and you will be exempt from bringing food + you will get to enjoy dishes from around the world! And you only need to bring food for one of your children. Please do bring a tupperware and cutlery for yourself.
If you have any questions, please email Ms. Ai at [email protected]
Thank you so much for your help!
Kind regards,
The ICD Team:
Ms. Ai
Mr. Hassey

This week I introduced Growth Mindset to our class. Students shared times they felt like giving up because something was difficult or they felt upset because they made a mistake. We created a display for our classroom wall to help us change the words we say and understand that we are always growing and learning! I'm excited to have this as part of our class and hope to see the students motivated and ready to face challenges, keep trying, and put forth their best effort no matter the task!
Reading
Readers Build Good Reading Habits
This week students learned how to make movies in their minds by using their senses (visualizing). First we reviewed our senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch), then closed our eyes and listened to a story. After reading the story, we talked about how things look, smell, sound, taste, and feel.
We also focused on reading with a partner:
-Readers learn more from their books by rereading with a partner
-Readers sit EEKK (elbow to elbow / knee to knee) with the book in the middle
-Readers take turns when they read together ( I read a page... my partner reads a page...)
-Readers practice their reading by echoing each other ( I read a page... my partner reads the same page)
Sentences and Paragraphs
During Writing we reviewed kinds of sentences and end marks.
Kinds of Sentences
Telling Sentence - period .
Asking Sentence - question mark ?
Exclamatory Sentence - exclamation point !
Students were introduced to writing a paragraph. Our class learned that a paragraph is a group of sentences about the topic and paragraphs include a beginning sentence, middle sentences, and an ending sentence.
Writing a Paragraph
Beginning Sentence: tells the main idea
Middle Sentences: tells more about the main idea and shares details
Ending Sentence: adds one last thought
*You indent at the beginning of a paragraph
Students also started their first writing piece! They brainstormed three topics, chose one, and drew pictures to gather details to complete a story map. After pre-writing, students used their story maps to start writing their first draft. Next week I will help students revise, edit, and publish their first paragraph.
Number Bonds / Addition Facts to 10
This week we finished our chapter about number bonds and completed an End of Chapter assessment.
Students played a game to practice numbers bonds. While working with a partner, students rolled a number dice and selected that amount of connecting cubes. Each student had their own color (Ex. Daniel rolled 4 and put 4 blue connecting cubes together. Kay rolled 3 and put 3 yellow connecting cubes together). Students put their parts (4 blue, 3 yellow) together to create a whole (7 total), then filled in a blank number bond on a recording sheet. We played this game with 3 students as well, practicing how to put 3 parts together to make one whole (ex. 3 blue, 6 white, 1 red --> 10 total).
Our next chapter is Addition Facts to 10. Students were introduced to this chapter on Friday. We will focus on addition strategies next week.
Sounds
During Science we explored changing sound and focused on changing volume. During these lessons, students investigated a one-string guitar and a xylophone. We reviewed that sounds come from objects that are vibrating and that vibrating objects always make sound. Students learned that volume is how loud or soft a sound is and sounds can differ in volume.
Next week we will investigate changing pitch.
Have a wonderful weekend!
- Ms. Allison
