October PTCs are scheduled for Friday, October 9th.
Please take a moment to pick a time that works well with your schedule and sign up using the Google Sheet form above. Your child will need to attend the beginning of the conference with you (5-10 minutes). This will be an opportunity for your child to share their goals and thoughts about school.
The form below will be sent home next week to help you prepare for our PTC. You will be able to find it in your child's homework folder. When you have a moment, please complete and return the form to school by Monday, October 5th. Thank you!
International Children's Day
We had a terrific International Children's Day at school on Friday! Students started the morning coloring flags. Throughout the day we watched PechaKucha presentations to learn more about one another and the countries our families are connected to. Thank you again for helping your child prepare their presentations at home this week! It was wonderful learning more about the countries represented at UST! We also had different snacks brought to school to share with the class, including maple butter cookies and senbei. Yum! Each student chose six treats to take home with them in their backpack. We ended the day on Zoom for a school singalong.

Writing
Writing a Paragraph
This week students learned how to revise, edit, and publish their writing. During the school year I will meet with students one-on-one in a writing conference before they publish their work. During a writing conference students read their writing to me and we talk about what they did to revise and edit independently. Next I help the student revise and edit their work. I model how to add words, change words, and check for capital letters, end marks, and spelling. When the writing conference is finished, they start their published writing piece. Students will continue publishing next week.
Reading
Readers Build Good Habits
During reading our class focused on making movies in our minds by using our senses (visualizing). First we reviewed our senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch), then closed our eyes and listened to a story. After reading the story, we talked about how things look, smell, sound, taste, and feel.
Social Studies
Why do schools have rules?
This week our class started a new social studies chapter. We asked the question, "Why do schools have rules?" Students drew pictures of rules they have at home. We talked about who makes these rules and the reasons why we have them. We will continue this chapter next week.
Math
Addition Facts to 10 - Addition Stories
Our class has been learning about addition using numbers to 10. This week students began practicing how to tell and solve addition stories. We looked at different pictures and created math stories to go along with each picture. We also created addition stories to match addition sentences shown on the board.
Example:
Addition Sentence: 3+4=7
Addition Story: Mr. Smith has 3 blue bow ties. He has 4 black bow ties. How many bow ties does Mr. Smith have?
Next week students will continue to practice solving addition stories by following the steps below:
1. Read and understand the story problem
2. Draw a picture
3. Create a number bond
4. Write an addition sentence
5. Answer the question
