Spelling - this week we had fun making and finding compound words (air + plane = airplane)
Reading - We continued with learning about the text features of non fiction books and how we can use them to find out things and learn new things from books.
Writing - This week we combined what we are learning in Science about animals with a new style of writing - Report Writing. Students all used a gathering grid and collected animal facts at home on the Web, from books and from their parents. They then used our drafting guideline to draft a rough copy of their reports detailing what their animal looked like, where they lived and what they ate as well as including some interesting facts. Children also used some of the non fiction books in class to see if they could find any extra information to add to make their reports more informative. Next week we will continue to work on these reports and will also make a diagram and a model to present their favourite animal to the class.
Grammar - Last week we looked at proper and common nouns and found this week that they can be replaced by pronouns such as he, she, they and it.
We learnt about living and non living things last week and focused on animals and their needs, as well as their defining features. We have some tadpoles and tiny river shrimp in the classroom brought in by Gaius. Children have been very interested in learning more about these tiny creatures and what they need to survive. On Friday students used classification skills to divide animals into groups based on the way they move and found that animals such as ducks can, swim, walk and fly.
On Tuesday we had an end of unit test for the unit on Numbers to 40. We also began on a new unit looking at Calendar and Time. In first Grade students learn to tell the time to the hour (......o'clock) and to the half hour (half past....). We shared with each other what time of the day things are done.
SOCIAL STUDIES
The learning objective of our Social Studies lesson this week was comparing and contrasting things. Students learnt that when we compare things we show how they are alike and when we contrast we show how they are different. We compared and contrasted some of the students and then moved to our text to see how two children introduced in the text were alike and different.
