Spelling this week focused on double ending consonants such as "ll", "gg" and "ss".
In Writing children worked on a writing piece about something they liked to do or a place they liked to visit following the Writing Process. This piece was assessed as an independent writing sample.
In Reader's Workshop we read and analysed 5 sense poetry. Students also wrote there own poem following a simple example providing clues to guess what topic the poem had.
I hear pop,pop, pop
I smell something buttery
I see something white,
I feel something bumpy
I taste something salty.
What could it be?
It's popcorn!
We finished the unit of Shapes and Patterns this week. We explored making patterns with plane and solid shapes. Everyone took the unit test on Thursday after reviewing what we have talked about this chapter. We also assessed written numbers to 100 and found that some students still need to practice this and may do so at home. This will be helpful so upcoming units in the new term.
The concepts we explored in Social Studies this week included cause and effect. We did active reading and then everyone had a chance to do a sorting activity to show they understood this relationship. We also looked at producers and consumers and tried to consolidate these concepts with a game.
As we have come to the end of our Techonology Around Us unit children worked on a science performance task. Their task was to be engineers and work through the design process to create a strong bridge that would hold a 8oz weight. Everyone worked individually to create some interesting bridges. On Friday we tested these bridges and found that two tall trestle bridges and two low solid wooden bridges were the designs that supported the weight. After testing students talked about why these four bridges were the strongest bridges and found that a bridge needs support and needs to be made of strong materials. Students then thought about how they could redesign their bridges and recorded their information and shared their ideas with their friends.
We started with our first Mystery Reader this week. Humphrey's mum (G1A) read the book The Somethingosaur by Tony Mitton to both grades. Thanks to Humphrey's mum for volunteering to be our first reader. If you would also like the chance to read to a enthusiastic audience please go to the Google sheet sent out previously and sign up.
On Thursday we had a group celebration for all the November Birthday's. Thank you to Miss Ai for the delicious cupcakes and to all the other birthday parents for the party supplies and drinks. Happy Birthday to Maya, Taito, Ria, Morgan and Gaius.
We heard the future dreams of 5 of our G1b friends today during Show and Tell. Students presented on what they would like to be when they grow up. We had a future doctor, an aerospace engineer, a paleontologist, a dress designer and a ballerina present today. The presentations are getting better and better as the students become more confident and organised. The audience really does need to work on being respectful listeners though.
When we arrived at the park on Friday there were lots of fallen leaves so G1 quickly got to work raking them up into a huge pile which they all decided to jump into!
