We had our birthday celebration on Thursday and we all wished Shota, Reed and Dora a Happy Birthday (along with G1A's Max, Piper and Kai.)
Ms. Erin would also like me to remind you to have a look at her music Weebly. She has found a great little app for your phone that the students could use to practice for their winter performance. Have a squiz!
Mathematics.
12, 14, __, 18, 20
We would find the difference between two of the numbers using a number line (14 - 12 is 2.) Therefore the rule is +2 for the number pattern. The missing number must therefore be 14 + 2 = 16. I recommend you asking the students about how to solve these problems. They may even explain what a, 'Reed Rainbow' is.
Writing.
gorgeous, glistening, sparkly, zigzaggy, dirty, dark, deep, crunchy, munchy, juicy, sharp, dangerous, fast, super-duper, dry and adorable.
Roald Dahl's poetry are proving to be a fruitful ground for finding interesting descriptive words and I'm pleased to see students starting to use a greater variety of words in their descriptive writing. Almost all students have finished their first draft and are now revising their writing so I'm hoping to find even more adjectives in their paragraphs next week!
Reading.
Later on, we looked at how character's feelings change throughout the course of a story. We combined this with giving evidence to support our ideas and looked at using the pictures and what the characters are saying to help us. We looked at 'I will never, not ever, eat a tomato' by Lauren Child (a class favourite) to show how Lola starts off as a fussy eater but changes to liking food once she tries them.
Science.
How can we use a similar system to send a message to another person?
We started with brainstorming some ideas. We remembered the sound travelled through the string so some students suggested talking into the spoon (the spoon would vibrate, then the string and then into the cup) and although this worked a little, we couldn't tell if it was the spoon vibrations or if the listener just heard the message giver's voice.....
The idea that worked was to get rid of the spoon and attach another cup to the string. As before, I'll let the students tell you what happened, although I'm sure all of you are familiar with what we made :)
