What a wonderful way to end a busy week with today's International Culture Day! A very big thank you goes out to all our G1a families who provided so much delcious food for our class lunch. It really was an amazing feast with so many different foods from around the world for everyone to try. We broke our feast into lunch and afternoon snack. The costumes and traditional dress of the many countries represented in our class were wonderful. Thank you also to Ayana's mother Idelia, Liam's mum Maria and Harrison's mother Lauren who all presented today. Ayana and her mother demonstrated how the "rock, paper, scissors" game is played in Indonesia with an elephant (thumb), person (pointer finger) and ant (pinky). Children were surprised tohear that the ant one overthe elephant - ask them why?. Liam's mum read the story of Paddington , the classic bear from English children's literature. Children joined in by giving his name during the reading and then asked for the book to be read again in the afternoon. Harrison's mum showed us a very old traditional Korean game, Yutnori. Children had fun playing this game that uses stick dice with five possible combinations that tells them how many spaces they can move on aboard. All in all Culture Day was a big success and we really appreciate all parent support forthis event.

This was a short and rainy week. Over three days we practiced the steps of the Writing Process with everyone writing about what they did on the long weekend. In math and science we used measuring tapes, rulers and non standard measurement to measure shelves in our classroom. We also held speeches for Student Council Elections on Wednesday. I was so proud that every child in G1a wants to run for student council and everyone stood up and did their speech telling friends why they wanted to be on the student council and what they would do for their friends and class. Then everyone had a day to think about who they would vote for on Friday. Our Student Councillors are Zion and Yotam supported by Ayana and Angelo. Well done to everyone for participating.
This week we managed to get outside most days despite the weather. While outside on Thursday we completed our first Eco Patrol of the street outside school and the University campus. We collected two big bags of trash. This out of classroom experience tied in very nicely with our social studies topic of being a good citizen in our community. Children also showed they were being good citizens at school by reaching our first target of 100 points on Class Dojo on Wednesday. We gave ourselves a big clap for a job well done and celebrated with popcorn on Thursday. Student Council Elections will be held on Friday 23rd. Almost everyone in G1a would like to try for a spot on Student Council so please help your child work on their speech at home and have it ready by Wednesday 21st. It can be written or oral.
Have a great long weekend. Larissa Below you can read about what we will be covering in the first term in our homeroom subjects or ELA, Math, Social Studies and Science.
We are already at the end of our second week! In math we worked with ten frames to count and compare numbers. We used more and less to compare sets of objects and greater than and less than to compare numbers. We made these groups with connecting cubes and also with seeds and leaves we found in the park. We enjoyed outside time despite the heat. When visiting the track children pretended they were at the Olympics. Playing with nature. In Social Studies we looked at the question, "How do people best cooperate?" We talked about working together, sharing resources, helping people, being respectful and how to be a good citizen in class. Everyone drew a picture to show how they could work together and cooperate in the classroom. In science this week we did a little investigation as scientists to see if we could identify objects using only our sense of touch.
Have a good weekend, Miss Larissa This week we had fun getting to know each other and learning the new G1 schedule. It was a week of finding out where everyone is at in terms of reading, writing and math so I can organize differentiated learning groups to support individual learning. Children also enjoyed their introduction to the special subjects such as music, art, PE and guidance. Thank you to everyone who came to the parent orientation morning. We ended the week with a party to celebrate Anthony's 6th birthday. Thank you to Anthony's parents for the special birthday treats.
Have a good weekend! Larissa |
