Unfortunately our field trip on Thursday was postponed due to a mix up with the buses. The field trip has been rescheduled for November 5th (next Thursday.)
Have a look at some of the photos of what we did this week!
Mathematics.
We also looked at curved and flat faces of shapes and asked the question, 'Does it roll?' The students hypothesised then tested their ideas by rolling the shapes down a ramp (towards a very brave Skylar!). We found out that if a shape has a curved surface it will roll. If it has a flat surface, it will slide.
Writing.
We also worked on using a dictionary to help us with our editing as well. Students worked in teams to find our spelling words (that were misspelled on their worksheet) in the dictionary and record the page that they were on, what the correct spelling was and what the word underneath them was. I am hoping to make this a regular activity on Wednesdays so that students become more independent in their writing.
Reading.
We also practiced partner retells for our reading groups where each person in our reading group reads a page and then tells the group what happened (either explicitly or implied). This helps the students gain a much wider understanding of the text at the end as they are exposed to other views and opinions.
Science.
- Can we change the sound that it makes?
- Can we change the volume of the tuning fork?
- How can we stop the sound halfway?
- How can we make the sound last the longest?
Students had 10 minutes to work in a group to solve these questions and report back to the class. In the second investigation we looked at how our ears work, how vibrations travel through the air and identifying which sounds our ears can hear clearly and which ones are harder. We spent some time upstairs on the K3 balcony listening to the sounds that we could hear. When we reported back to the class we found that the louder sounds were the most common heard but the softer sounds were only heard by a few students.
